I love free too...LOL. Bee keeping is very expensive here in Canada. Just the hive (the bees only) is between $250 to $350. The hive box and protective gear are a separate cost. I love me some good organic honey, but I will have to wait a while to get bees.In the meanwhile I am planting loads of wild flowers on my property to prepare for bees in the future.

I bought one hive set and from that, I just build my own hive boxes. As far as the bee suit, I just bought a jacket and gloves, but with the heat in Louisiana, I quickly quit wearing them. It's just not practical. I think I remember my initial startup was around 700 bucks. I failed miserably the first year, and I just wasn't in the mindset this year. I think I will give it another try next spring. There seems to be a large learning curve with bees imo.

Initial sunk costs are fairly high, to be sure. But that line is correct: it's an expensive hobby (or can be, if you want to expand your apiary). It is *so* worth it, though.

That was a good breakdown of the startup cost! we keep going back and fourth on starting with bees, but usually talk ourselves out of it mostly because of all the other things we have going on. But there is no substitute for real honey!
