BTO Bird ID - Skuas

Показать описание
Identifying skuas passing offshore in late summer is one of the great challenges of bird ID. There are clues to help us, however, and - with practice - most individuals can be identified. This workshop will point you in the right direction and help you to focus on the features and markings that will be most helpful when sea-watching.

Excellent video, and some of the best Jaeger/Skua footage I have found. A reminder to North American birders that what this video calls Arctic Skua we call Parasitic Jaeger. Pomarine and Long-Tailed Skua's are also called Jaegers. Most of the points about Great Skua would also be good for South Arctic Skua.

I love these videos. On the American east coast, you'd also have to separate Great Skua from South Polar Skua which is very similar. I'm surprised South Polar Skua isn't seen off the coast of Europe as well. In the US and Canada, the name "Jaeger" is used for the three smaller species with Arctic Skua being called "Parasitic Jaeger".
