Has the drought ruined our honey harvest?

This week we harvested a small amount of honey from our bees. Due to the drought and early heatwave they were not able to make a lot of honey. But still enough for us to have some, and them to have some. The result is a delicious wildflower honey for us to enjoy.

New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten, our toddler Puck and baby Bo on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home.

No way! You got a suit for your daughter, that is soo cool, teaching, learning and experiencing things like this at such an age, such great parenting.

Beekeeper here. The bees will use a load of water to evaporate inside the hive and keep it cool. So access to (clean) water is essential. Shade would help too.

When I first saw Puk's yellow suit I was hoping it has black stripes too ;)

This was so interesting, I loved that you let the bees take back all the left over scraps and that it saved you the worst of the clean up. It looks delicious!

Hi. Good job with the honey, guys. Three things, if I may intrude. • Using a smoker calms the bees while working around the hives. • Save the honeycombs and sell as a seperate product. Cut into rectangles and package in greaseproof paper for sale. • Third: "the top layer, or whatever you call Cappings is what it's called. 😉 Its what the bees bring back but left 'un processed'. Some fine dust and importantly pollen. I use a straight edge the length of the plate and scrape into a container. If looks too dry add some more honey, mix and bottle. Sell as Honey Cappings with the notice on the label "Natures answer to hay fever". One teaspoon a day and hayfever becomes a thing of the past. Always look forward to your videos. Good work you do.

Lovely to see your daughter taking part! I am amazed that there are child sized suits. What a wonderful life experience for her ! Glad to see that the bees get to do all the cleaning up after, especially as there are so few flowers around now for them. Good job👍🏽

Wat een geweldig pak voor Puck! En een geinig T-shirt van Maarten. Lijkt me een heerlijk plakkerig klusje, honing slingeren.

That was so nice to watch, thanks for sharing! So cute to see your little girl all suited up as well. Never knew you could just leave the equipment outside and let the bees clean it up! Great way not to waste anything as well. This was definitely one of my favourite episodes to watch ever! :)
