Childhood trauma is like traveling through life with a permanent hole in your heart, of which never closes, even on your very best day

Alas. So much discussion about healing and recovery and so little about the primary prevention of unsupportive and harmful parenting. A new kind of parenting education that reaches everyone, everywhere would be a powerful form of prevention.

I truly am obsessed with this myself. Your Ted talk opened the doorway for me figuring out what was going on with me. I have an aces score of 9 and a residency score of 2 I believe. I'm in counseling and a recovering drug addict. I didn't become an addict until age 28 I'm 33 now and it's very hard. I have to constantly work at things. I wish I would have discovered this before I allowed my trauma to effect my own children. I'm always having trauma responses conscious and unconscious. It effects everything in my life right now.. the tone of voice someone speaks to me in triggers my fight or flight response simply because as a child my mother was so emotionally abusive my survival instinct became doing anything to prevent her from speaking to me that way. So when it happens I can't breathe I panic and it has held me back in life.

The best part of learnings about ACES for me is that it helped me normalize many of my black male clients that believed that they are “the problem”. Never to justify but to understand “what happened to you”. Brilliant. Thank you. 🙏🏾

This is so true . Why aren’t we having mandatory psychology 101 before dating years so at least we know our role titles in dysfunctional families and have a change to not date cluster B types . I wish I would have known

Thankyou so much for your wonderful work in this area Dr. Nadine and Oprah for talking about this! I agree it is a public health crisis. I have been stuck in the trauma response state for so long since I had an A.C. E. score of 10 by the time I was 7 years old and have been re traumatized as an adult on several occasions I ended up on disability in my 40's with no appeal! when I was finally diagnosed with complex ptsd and now I am in the process of applying for death with dignity in another country because my health issues are so severe and continue to worsen. Why are we so behind in the midwest here on this issue? Why can't we see that prevention is key?! The widespread ignorance is unacceptable, it drives me batty!

I'm not always a big Oprah Winfrey fan from a TV perspective, but she's a really good person to talk about this. She went through a helluva lot when she was a child and came through not just with career success, that's not really the point, but she seems to have come through her experiences quite well-adjusted and empathetic.

This definitely passed the Bechdel test. God its inspirational seeing two fucking awesome women doing such big amazing things. Learning about the ACE study was my ‘last straw’ watching my younger siblings being abused. The fact that you statistically carry it with u was just not ok to me, and I do what i can to destress my little boys now❤️ When theyre teens theyre moving in with me to start healing asap.

I'm learning, I'm healing, and making connections from my past trauma. I want to heal, and make a difference in my community.

I love this so much. As someone from the UK who trained originally as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, I've always asked this question; however after several years, I realised that it was important to be systemic in my approach, so I also trained as a systemic psychotherapist. I applaud you for highlighting this 👏🏾

8 unless jail counts as prison, and my mom leaving a few times and coming back counts as "separation". If these two count than it would be 10. Ive been suicidal, depressed, completely messed up in the head. Not going anywhere in life. I felt validated by this test and i am ready to go and start my healing journey. ACE and trauma survivors we got this! 🎉.

OMG, I knew Ms. O would seek you out. I waited and waited for it. I was happy, she will catapult this cause farther than I could have ever hoped/imagined. God bless you Nadine

I've had 7. As I have gotten older my behaviors have gotten worse. I do see a therapist every week. I'm hoping one day I'll heal.
