Not to knock China.... But the driverless metro system in Copenhagen, Denmark made its debut in 2002. Sure it runs on rails, but seeing as most trains do, the first driverless train went into service 17 years ago.

Driverless trains was first used in early 1985 on the scarborough rt in Toronto then vancouver skytrain in late 1985
