Retrospective look at Jackie Chan from the 70s to current times. Looking at his top five films from a fresh perspective and analyzing why they are so good.

#1 Rumble In The Bronx:
This movie is action packed and features some really fun stunts. One of my favorite ones is when Jackie jumps from the roof top of a car parking lot and jumps to the building across from it going through the fire escape route and through the door. What’s funny about this movie too is the fact that it was actually shot in New-York which leads to really nice filming locations. At the time I was living in Europe and was dreaming of going to the United States. Seeing the gritty street of the Bronx and fights all over the city was extremely fun. Even though the story is somewhat simple, it has enough amusement and comedy that you won’t just fast forward to the fight scenes. Also, the tension that is created every time Jackie fights the gang is heart pounding. After all, we associate gangs with danger and seeing Jackie standing up to them every time and even getting hurt sometimes is such a hook. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it as it has enough story to please even people who aren’t necessarily martial art fans, and enough martial arts and crazy stunts to keep you on your edge.

#2 The Legend of Drunken Master:
This is a sequel to the 1978 movie entitled “Drunken Master”. The original movie is amazing in itself and features a really young Jackie going through the different character styles that encompass the drunken style of fighting. Even though the original movie has some fun humor and absolutely epic fighting styles, I feel like the 1994 sequel is a much better movie. I understand that martial art movies should have martial arts but 60 minutes of fighting for a 90 minute movie just becomes overwhelming. “The legend of Drunken Master” is set in early 20th century China and follows the adventures of Wong Fei-Hung, played by Jackie Chan, his father Wong Kei-Ying and servant Tso on their way home after a trip to the northeast of the country. The group had gone there to acquire some medicine along with a special type of ginseng. On their way back, they get into an altercation with the military and their ginseng box gets mixed up with another box containing the imperial seal.

#3 Police Story:
This movie relied so much on breaking glass that the crew dubbed this film “Glass Story”. This is movie was so successful that it spawned five sequels, one spin-off dubbed supercop 2 and an unofficial spin-off named Crime Story. As for myself I love the 1st three movies in the Police Story saga the most. I feel that the 80s and 90s was the golden age for Jackie Chan and most of the movies that he did in this era were extremely exciting. Police Story tells the story of Chan Ka-Kui, a police officer, who is part of an undercover operation that leads to the arrest of a crime lord name Chu Tao. Chan’s assignment after having completed his undercover work is to protect the crime lord’s secretary Selina Fong until her trial testifying against the crime lord. The trial fails due to Selina tampering with the evidence, and upon Chu Tao’s release, he seeks revenge on inspector Chan. This leads to many interesting action sequences culminating in an extraordinary finally in a shopping mall. This movie has some of the wildest stunts.

#4 Operation Condor:
This is a sequel to Amor of god and was followed by a third film entitled Chinese Zodiac. The first two movies in the trilogy are amazing and feature some incredible stunts and enjoyable storylines, whereas the Chinese Zodiac is a very poorly written film, and even though technically with a much higher budget, the 2012 sequel fell prey to its own success. Operation Condor is an amazing movie which for me is somewhat of a Chinese Indiana Jones style film with good martial arts and stunts. The movie tells the story of Asian Hawk, played by Jackie Chan. His secret agent name is Condor. He gets commissioned by a Turkish duke to find Nazi gold buried in the Sahara Desert. On his journey, he teams up with three women that try to help him as best as they can, but often end up being pretty clumsy in their attempts.

#5 Gorgeous:
This is actually not really a martial arts movie but more of a drama that has some elements of martial arts. The movie tells the story of Bu, a beautiful Taiwanese girl who comes from a small fishing village. One day she discovers a romantic message in a bottle which makes her travel to Hong Kong in order to find its writer. Once she arrives at the writer’s house, she discovers that it was written by a gay man, and the beautiful romantic words were actually addresses to his lover. Sad and lonely, Bu encounters a wealthy recycling owner called C.N., played by Jackie Chan. Little by little they get closer and we learn more about his past and rivalry between him and his competitor businessman arch-nemesis friend, Howie Low.

Great video David! Can’t get enough Jackie Chan, Rumble in the Bronx was also the first movie I saw him in. Also could do lists on Top 5 Fights and Top 5 Stunts.

This video was gold for me! I'm also a big fan of Jacky Chan, I watched a lot of his movies (and for some of them: I watched again and again). But he made so much movies that I never saw everything. For example "Operation Condor" was unknown for me. I hope to find it one day 😉

Sadly, I’ve only seen drunken master 2. All the other movies he mentioned I actually have not seen. Really good martial arts movies which I’m going to check out
