CD and DVD are fragile media. A few scratches here and there and they can easily become coasters on your table. I have had plenty of them myself.

Lets just look at some of the ways we can recover data from those spoilt CD/DVDs. Blu Ray & HD DVD

Anatomy of scratches
Scratches that are perpendicular (going from the center outwards) are generally less harmful or damaging than the scratches that go along the spiral. So if your CD/DVD has more of the latter ones, then the chances of a good recovery may be bleak.

I owe you many thanks; I was troubleshooting an extremely rare acquisition I made not too long ago for preservation and it had a small but unusual scratch pattern and would not dump the other half of the data.dxa file. I was somewhat skeptical, but your Recovery Tool Box did the trick and I can boot it up without incident. Saved me hundreds on potentially lost data and disc resurfacing (which I may still do, but I at least don't have to worry about the data).

I want to thank you so much for this video. I read some of the negative comments, and I don't know what state their discs were in, but I had 12 Home videos that had started corroding, computer could not even read the discs properly, and i was about to lose 15 years of precious memories, but thanks to you taking the time to help people, I managed to save over 90% by using both of your suggestions. Thank you so much!! Recovery Toolbox worked liked a charm. When it gets to the damaged parts it did really small increments of data copy and eventually got the whole file out!! I tried Roadkil unstoppable copier before I found this video and it did not work. I'm so happy, tyvm!!!

I used Roadkill on a damaged audio CD and, in about 1.5 seconds got 18 .cda files, each one kilobyte. I have no idea what to do with these files.

OMG thank you so much. Recovery Toolbox worked for me!!! I tried roadkil before finding this video and it just got stuck in the middle. But with Recovery Toolbox, it should me tiny little progressions until it got passed the damaged areas. TYSM!!

The quality of this video held up so well, I had to do a double take when I looked at the upload date.

That first program is VERY slowly, but surely one KB at a time, transferring the ancient 128mb video file from the disc I found. This will take a while, but DAMN, it seems to be working!

i am using the software it saying trying to skip bad sectors. does that means it cant recover the files?

I have a set of Maxell blue ray discs that need some data recovery. They were written within the last three years, but some couldn't be read. There maybe some infinitesimally small stains on a few of them, otherwise there are no visible scratches on the written surface. You can clearly see the data tracks that were burnt onto the disc so the data must still be there. Maxell BDR's are rather fickle (no wonder they discontinued them). I cleaned the BD reader and the discs and the discs still can't be read. I'll try the applications you suggested.

BTW, if you really want to repair CDs and DVDs, keep a Aleratec DVD/CD Disc Repair Plus Kit around your house, they're very handy. :) They sell them all over the place online, some local stores probably have them too... but probably for a lot more than somewhere like Newegg or Amazon.
