CULTURE SHOCK IN ECUADOR: 10 THINGS THAT SURPRISED ME

When we travel outside of our home countries, there will always be things that are different than what we are used to. This is a list of things I noticed in Ecuador that I thought were interesting or threw me for a loop!

Good tips about the money. This goes for most LATAM countries as well. The ATMs give you twenties but if you are wanting more than a few dollars in change the only places that usually can break a 20 without issue are the larger super markets.

I remember that the most usual weather in Quito is rainy, but if you go to Guallabamba or Los Valles around Quito you will find a dry climate the majority of time or may be if you prefer rainy climate you can go to Mindo or los Bancos, the rainforest in that part is normally humid. This made me smile ... a lot. I have lived in Ecuador for 9 years, after retiring in the U.S. at 68. Next time you come to Ecuador, get out of the big cities. And cops here love to have their pictures taken. Our National Policia are fantastic and include many women, even on their SWAT team. Quito and Guayaquil are not what I consider to be Ecuador. I have never had to pay in a restroom anywhere in Ecuador, but I always carry toilet paper. I have traveled the world, and this was my retirement choice. I live about 50 miles north of Quito and I can walk the streets day and night and always feel safe. If I did not know you were describing Ecuador, I would not know it was Ecuador. If you want to see the "real" Ecuador, you need to get out of the big tourist cities. Ecuador is one of the most diverse countries in the world with the friendliest people. I think you missed most of that. You must come back.

I was amazed you did not see guinea pigs being cooked for consumption. Charging for TP is really a business for the lower class. There are only two seasons dry and wet. Lots of volcanoes. Muggy and hit at the coast and Amazon basin. Quito's altitude keeps it cool. In one day you have all kind of seasonal weather. All schools have uniforms.

Ecaudor is pretty hot except in the mountain region because of the elevation. You should visit Guayaquil, its great!

Alpacas live in the mountains. The Andean people and culture existed before the countries were divided the traditional garments and crafts do have overlap between the two countries.
The UV index is always off the chart. Wear sunblock, hat, or umbrella.
The people who charge for toilet paper also keep the bathrooms clean. It's a job.
Police presence can be increased for a number of reasons, but the centro of Quito is the presidential palace and government buildings. You wouldn't be surprised to see police near the white house either. Also, drugs in small quantities isn't a crime.
I think you did a great job noticing differences. The small.denominations and watching when you cross the street are key.

For someone that has Ecuadorian blood in them, and goes there quite a bit. An word of advice would be to take stuff to put on the toilet seats. I would also recommend to try to speak Spanish to the venders, because they will up the price if you speak English.

It’s not La Basilica. That legend is from La Iglesia de San Francisco which the devil supposedly help to built but was tricked, and the last brick was never placed.

The poverty difference is that in America a lot of what the Lefties describe as poverty is actually "relative poverty". There is a BIG difference and it annoys the heck out of me that the Lefties NEVER seem to acknowledge that fact.
Probably because you can alleviate absolute poverty but relative poverty is based on mathematical relationships and it can NEVER be eradicated unless the whole world earns exactly the same amount.

wow, of course its not going to be hot in Quito, its a different story if you're in Guayaquil and the side of the coast, what village did you visit, i've never seen anyone with a machete in the city. you havent seen poverty in the US, you havent seen women with children living under a bridge, homeless people on the side of the road begging for money?
