NCTH, I'm a counselor and a serious answer to your question about why officers seemed compelled to give directives is that their job title and training instills a sense of authority and duty. When they get called to a scene, they are expected to act in some way. When no law is being broken, they are rendered useless and feel the urge to legitimize their presence. Giving directives and sometimes threats of arrests restores their feelings of importance. Qualified immunity, their sense of authority and power and the risks involved with the job, by nature, creates an air of importance. That's why it is vital to psychologically evaluate candidates. The biggest tyrants in law enforcement are the natural narcissists or those will personality disorders.

The only reason the cop needed to say “don’t go on the property “ is because someone in the past said”no one told me not to” and a lawyer made a stink about it.

In a court of law, the officer can say that he warned the people that he talked to.He can’t say he assumed you already knew not to violate the property line.The man grabbed your equipment knowing it was wrong, but you warned him not to.

The reason for the "Do not go upon the property" directive, is actually so the shop owner has standing in court because you have been verbally given 'Due Notice" of trespass.

If I owned a body shop are a car repair shop and I saw someone outside recording I would go out and talk and be friendly tell people if they need body work or car repairs done and I look us up that's what anybody in their right mind would do

They probably have a legal responsibility to inform, whether for liability sake or to set a clear precedent for an arrest if a violation occurs, or both.
