Here’s everything you need to know to create that “dragged light” look on the dance floor.

Hey, we’re Jeff and Cat, a husband and wife photography team.

We set our cameras to manual and adjust the shutter to around ⅛ of a second. Remember, the longer the shutter is open the longer the streaks. In this specific case, it was still light out, so we balanced the equation with ISO and aperture adjustments that made the backdrop dark.

Setting the flash to auto allowed our camera to determine the correct output to expose our dancers, while leaving the background bathed in shadows.

Start with a slight camera angle, focus on the subject, then in a swift fluid motion, rotate the camera as soon as you press the shutter. The light streaks will match the path of your motion.

Rotate the camera, give it a twist, even shake it! Try different techniques and see how they can add a dynamic vibe to your dance floor photos.

Hopefully you found this tip helpful. If you’d like to learn more about wedding photography, editing and the business behind it all, make sure to give us a follow.
