Imagine being worth billions of dollars and not being able to produce a shade darker than tan 💀

I struggled for decades finding colors light enough for my almost transparent skin. There's zero excuse for not having colors deep enough and with accurate undertones for darker skinned people. Some of those were damn near orange.
it's time beauty companies catered to and celebrated everyone. And I mean EVERYone.

Someone mentioned this earlier - a lot of those companies actually do have darker shades (some not much darker tbh), the main issue in this scenario is that the store doesn’t stock them. Many times it’s based on the clientele demographics on what shades they stock (but not always… I live in Memphis in a predominantly black neighborhood and there’s not a lot more going on with the shade ranges here either…). Ultimately it’s the store’s decision tho. I do work at Ulta and agree that a lot of brands stop at medium tan ranges but I hope this changes soon. Darker complexions are JUST AS WORTHY of finding their shade and it might be a “small problem” in comparison to other problems in the world, but representation in the beauty industry can really make a difference. A lot of our darker customers struggle to find their matches and it breaks my heart to see how frustrated and disappointed they get.

as a lighter person I feel horrible seeing this, and I can't help but think what goes through the creators heads when they make shades for makeup, when I'm old enough to run a business I wanna make shades for everyone this is just horrible that people don't make dark shades :(

Its like they couldn't grasp the concept that darker skin has cold undertones too? Why is everything too red

Im so glad you go into stores and show the whole damn shelf... It makes it all feel so much worse because the inequality is so ridiculously in our faces

Thank you for this series. It shows me where to spend my $$, because if you don't value me, you do NOT get my coin.

It sucks shopping for makeup, when you know you will most likely not find one.

Omg you’ve opened my eyes to something I never saw. As a white woman I am used to seeing my color (porcelain) everywhere in makeup, bandaids, marketing… It never occurred to me that foundation for black people was INCREDIBLY limited but now I just can’t unsee it. It’s disgusting to see. And it’s pure racism that us white women don’t even see unless it’s put right in front of our nose. Thank you for educating! 👏🏻 this needs to change, we want to see more inclusivity and representation (this is why Fenty Beauty is bae honestly). ✨

I used to work in the cosmetics section at a department store stocking drugstore makeup brands, and it was upsetting how little variety there was. Many women with dark skin tones would come into the store and leave disappointed bc they couldn’t find foundations that matched their shades and undertones. A few customers also vocalized to me that they felt upset about how there weren’t any lipsticks that worked with their dark skin.

The store you went to was farrrr more disappointing than mine. L’Oréal has a few shades much darker than those you saw at that store

I had a co-worker who couldn't find foundation because of her skin tone. She would go to this expensive makeup store in downtown Chicago to have her foundation personally mixed just for her! She had the money so she was able to afford it. She complained about the same problem, that darker foundations had too much red and not enough yellow. Her skin had yellow undertones.

I am a Slavic woman with very light skin with neutral skin tone. I always have to buy the lightest foundation. Often the foundations have too yellow tones or too pink and then I look like a pig. I didn't know that girls with dark skin have similar problems but the other way around. You are a beautiful woman.

What really gets me is that this is just reflective of how society is in general. It’s not a make-up issue. It’s just a global issue.

What sucks is that a lot of these brands do produce inclusive makeup shades if you look online, but stores actively choose to limit the shades they carry on the shelf.

the worst part is, half the time the lightest shade ALSO isn’t inclusive. like i’m fucking vampire pale especially in the winter, and up until a year or two ago i couldn’t find a shade that was a reasonable price that had the right undertone and was light enough 💀

What I hate is, I'm on the dark skin spectrum but my undertone is yellow. It literally makes it impossible for me to find a foundation because companies think all dark skins are red undertone. 🙄

Honestly this series is so educating and just generally educating myself about the color theory. Before watching your videos and watching Monica’s videos, I had NO IDEA about undertones and the color theory. Like Monica taught me so much about the color theory and how difficult it is for people with darker complexions and people who have olive skin to find stuff that fits due to it being too red or too orange. Thank you so much for making this series more people need to know about this 🫶🏼
