A-Level Further Maths D4-04 Method of Differences: Example 4

Question: once you've discovered the pattern, and you start subbing in variations of 'n, ' do you sub in as many variations as it took to discover the pattern? i.e. in this example you could clearly see the pattern after the 3rd input, so you'd have to sub in 3 variations of n (n-2, n-1 and finally n) to complete the question?
