I feel like the 100 years before botw was more fleshed out in the game and so age of calamity was bound to disappoint expectations or step on existing lore etc, esp made by a company outside Nintendo. But the sparseness of lore surrounding the imprisoning war might make it easier to make it actually canon and flesh out the sages and the lore in a satisfying way, even if still being developed by an outside group

I mean that's what they said about Age of Calamity. That we will be experience what happened 100 years ago before Breathe of the Wild yet it turned into a separate timeline. If it's just the 'Imprisoning War' that we saw in Tears of the Kingdom, gonna be kinda boring since we know how it ends.

I am wondering how they're gonna pad out the playable roster, though. Age of Calamity had 18 playable characters in the base game, and more through DLC. The only characters we know of from the era of the Imprisoning War are Zelda, Rauru, Sonia, Mineru, the four ancient sages, Ganondorf (would have to be a non-canon post-game playable character like Calamity Ganon was in AoC), a couple of background Gerudo that look like Kotake and Koume (probably would also have to be post-game), and _maybe_ the ancient Zonai-related hero whose 'aspect' Link can unlock in Tears of the Kingdom, depending on how long the length of time is between the Imprisoning War and Calamity Ganon's emergence 10, 000 years before BotW, since a tapestry of said calamity seems to depict said Ancient Hero.
Even if we include the Ancient Hero _and_ count Kotake and Koume separately (even though they'd more likely be a combo character like Robbie and Purah were, if they get to be playable at all), that's still only 12. 10 if we don't do those things. I guess they could just focus on fleshing out the movesets of the characters they _do_ have more, but I thought the movesets in Age of Calamity were already plenty fleshed out.

I just don't see how they could flesh out the roster for this one without involving time travel (which would be very hard to balance with still making it canon) or making a much higher percentage of this game's cast completely original characters than AoC had (which could be seen as a risk, despite the as far as I'm aware largely positive receptions of Terrako, Sooga and Astor).

Yes i believe they even said that it's between BOTW and TOTK. Even age of calamity was canon and they confirmed that.

Would be cool if it happened in the same universe as the last Hyrule Warriors game from BOTW and one day the mainline games and hyrule warrior games can combine!

In my opinion all the Hyrule Warriors are canon, they just haven't been placed on the official timelines.
Age of Calamity is just in a new bench of the timeline by itself, and the first game is in a similar situation due to the time/space travel happening in both games
