Thanks for sharing this! The green plastic retaining clip was broken on my ‘03 Avalanche when I bought it and I’ve never been able to open the tailgate. Took a pair of needle nose pliers to the rod and pulled it to the right and was able to get it to unlatch! Have ordered a replacement latch on Amazon for $20 bucks. Thank you again!

Great! This worked for me except I had to pry the right side. The left side would only open it a fraction of an inch.

Bruh! and here I thought I need to take my 6'4" self through the cabin into the back with a flashlight risking getting stuck.. 1 flathead did the triick!
