Yeah, the Senate was a very important thing that lasted for way longer than the republic

My favorite fact is that the Pontifex Maximus was the High Priest of Rome, a position attributed to the semi legendary King Numa when Rome was still a city state ruled by a king sometime ~ 600 BC. It was a big deal throughout the kingdom's history and stayed a big deal when Rome became a Republic. Later it became marginalized as a purely ceremonial role. Various Roman bigwigs like Julius Caesar being made Pontifex Maximus for whatever prestige reasons but only paying cursory attention to religious affairs aside from ceremonial dog and pony shows.. But when Christianity took over the role got transferred to the Catholic Popes who still hold the role if not exact title Pontifex Maximus.

It’s worth noting that by the time of 476 the Senate in Rome had basically already reverted to being the Municipal Government of the City of Rome, with the Western Roman Emperors hunkered down in Ravenna. So the transition from Western Roman to Ostrogothic Rule wasint a dramatic one for the senate.

The Eastern Roman Senate lasted centuries more slowly devolving into a powerless club, the title, then nothing. But that process took until the 14th century.

The Roman Senate in constantinople last attested action was in the 1200s. That the institution literally lasted near on 2000 years doesnt get spoken about enough

1 huge thing you missed and that is there is another “senate” that was also formed in the “eastern” Roman Empire

The Roman Catholic church survived the attack. It's fascinating to consider that the RC church outlasted the government itself. That speaks to it's vast and lasting influence.

It's fascinating that the senate did outlive the empire. I got to say though, the fact that one day they started to convert the hall to a church was kind of sad. The simple fact that just one day a political powerhouse through centuries just goes quiet in the night just seems sad.

Kinda surprising how the middle east didn't fall to the germanic barbarians

Even though north Africa did

I'm guessing either Egypt was well defended or Constantinople kept the barbarians in Europe only

Theodoric didn't take Italy until 493, prior to that it was ruled by Odoacer.

I would love for him to cover when the roman empire or the Roman's in general "fallen" because if you think about it, they never really did. Just like the ashes of the Phoenix, they simply took another form

The fact that the building is apparently still standing and the Italian Parliament DOESN'T meet in it is the height of disappointment.

The Ostrogoths didn’t conquer the WRE in 476, that was when Odoacer usurped power. His exact ethnic origins are unclear but he was leading the Foederati and a coalition of different Germanic peoples who had fought for Rome. The Ostrogoths came in 493 where they attacked Odoacers kingdom.

I feel like people give the Ostrogothic kingdom just a little bit too much shit. They actually did a lot for the citizens of Italy and the city of Rome actually saw kind of a mini-golden age during that time. Until of course it got sieged a bunch of times during the 500s by Romans and Lombards. Thanks Justinian.

Such a great lesson in the real, nitty-gritty of history. The "lasts" & "forgotten knowledges" are rarely these grand, ostentatious things - lost in battle by kings or generals. Most of history accumulates, & disintegrates, in the small things forgotten.

We didn't lose Classical texts from book burnings or sacking cities, we lost them when scribes around the sea no longer deemed them worthy to be reprinted. No battle or weak ruler toppled W. Rome, the Empire had long become Theseus's ship over generational neglect, mismangement, & overextention. We don't know when the Senate last sat, because generations of politicking left them increasingly too marginal to even be recorded...

Off topic but Hungarian Black army would be something of interest for you to cover. Their rather weird formation is intriguing.

is it weird I suddenly felt an urge to watch a series detailing the day-to-day life of one of the last senators?
