"We come. We see. We conquer."

I imagine many of the legionaries who survived probably became mercenaries, or body guards, or warlords in the west or just joined the Germanic kingdoms. Or many fled to the eastern empire.

Man, the Roman legions were the absolute chads. I'm glad that, at least, we still have the Ninth Legion. Hope they come back soon from Britannia with the cigarettes and milk bricks they went to buy 😊

Can you just Imagine if a legion had made it to the modern day? A lot of armies today take pride In the battles that they have fought In the past, but can you imagine bieng part of a brigade that fought German barbarians or carthagenians in Sicily 2, 000 years ago like can you just imagine the flex...

Imagine being the final Roman soldier to perish

Someone needs to make a movie about this. Just imagine the last legion of a fallen empire, still fighting for survival and a sense of purpose in a world torn apart by savagery

Legions were basically replaced by ‘themes’ in the Eastern Roman Empire

And so the planet broke before the guard did
And Rome fell before it’s legions did.

What happened to the legions of Western Roman Empire? I recall there were some border guards in Noricum I believe who were unaware of the fall of Ravena for weeks. And they only learned it because they sent someone looking for salaries. Surely there are more stories like that?

Well, the late Roman legions were a fifth the size plus the structure of the army had changed a lot, but it's fair to say the legionary name and a version of the system survived until the Heraclian reforms and the thematic army of the early seventh century, as the empire reeled back from Egypt and Syria. So probably some named or numbered legions were eventually stood down and settled on the land in places like Anatolia around this same time. But it is very cool to have history on a specific legion fighting in those very wars, and all the better it had that rare long continuity.

It's also suggested that Legio V Macedonica was present at Yarmouk and formed the right wing of the Roman army.

This right wing was devastatingly lethal against the Arab infantry, outclassing and almost routing the Arab left wing on every day of their engagement.

It was only due to Khalids unmatched generalship that the Macedonian legion didn't absolutely destroy the Arab army on the battle. Many of them would drown in the Wadi Yarmouk during the army's retreat

I was a part of Leg V Macedonica reenactment club from Saint-Petersburg, which you’ve shown on the photo

It makes me wonder how a group of ragtag arabs could withstand the onslaught of veteran legion for several days in Yarmouk and even comes out victorious on the last day. Just a few years ago the arab would go to war in Badr with wooden stick they found along the way as they are too poor to buy swords and armour.

There is a Youtube that ranks the most effective armies in history with a win/loss record. Even today, the Romans come in 7th or 8th over-all. Pretty impressive that standing could survive 1500 years after that army went away.

The graphic is very helpful in understanding my family history. I thought the Suevi were in France or Germany.
And finding Vandals on Sardinia explains the tiny % of Sardinian DNA.
