This could not have come at a better time. Just started learning about Linux in my Multi-User OS class today. We were using Suse Linux to get use to creating directories and running scripts ect. Thanks Wendell, looking forward to more videos.

I had some fun with Linux a few years back, and right now I'm messing around with my rasPi, can't wait for more videos.loved tinkering with stuff since I was a kid. Back on the subject it's incredible how many of us are still running windows because of games and yet Microsoft has really neglected PC gaming.

Keep up with the great work, Wendell, you are truly inspiring.

"We choose to install Linux, not because it is easy, but because it is hard."
Hilarious!
Looking forward to the series. Completely new to Linux and hoping to get experimental. These videos are great timing for that craving.

Any sufficiently advanced Microsoft technology is indistinguishable from malware.

I'm going to attempt to make some intelligent counter points TekLinux...

You say that Linux shows you what goes on behind the curtain and Windows/OSX does not. This actually isn't entirely true, it completely depends on the distribution and installation. You can get Linux distributions like SUSE that don't show you anything behind the scenes. And you can also configure Windows to show you everything that is going on behind the scenes (usermode debugger, kernel mode debugger, registry, etc). I think it's fair to say that out of the box a complex distribution like Debian might show you more of what is behind the curtain but people should realize that some of the most highly used distributions are mostly used because they are so easy to use and don't require any understanding to install or operate. SUSE for instance has like 1-click install and go, hell you can even boot it and use it off a DVD or thumb drive without having to do anything.

I agree with almost all of your networking points. I also built an IP masquerading router from a crappy P4 laying around with Debian on it and loved it and it was seriously a nightmare to setup, but once I did I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. But Windows Server also offers low level networking and routing stuff including bridging, NAT and even enterprise level stuff like exchange, domains, etc. I think both are very powerful and capable but I will give it to linux for being ultimately the most flexible (and obviously cheapest, both hardware and software). And to be honest I feel much more accomplished setting this stuff up in Linux since it's nightmarish hard by comparison to what you have to do in Windows (most of it through the GUI).

I agree that Linux has dominated the server world, and that is easy to do when you are free and cost to support it is very low. Ultimately pennies turn to dollars, and dollars turn to millions when you're a large corporation with a huge data center. But also realize that the Windows 10 kernel runs on Arduino and ARM so it's not quite as bloated as it once was. Also with Microsoft accepting .NET as cross platform and supporting it this is going to represent serious competition to the aging JAVA platform moving forward IMO. And this is coming from someone that hates Microsoft (They laid me off after-all) :D

I 100% agree with you on Microsoft obfuscating the shit out of things to keep people dependent on there platform. But this is the core reason why I think Linux will never take over the desktop. I think it has the potential but Microsoft has too many companies dependent on technologies like .NET, DirectX, WMI, RPC, etc to easily make the transition. I think what really needs to happen is for Linux to literally get every gaming company on there side since that is what determines who dominates the market (much like Porn for VHS and Bluray). But that probably won't happen because Linux doesn't have enough combined centralized resources to help these companies make the transition and compensate them for there time to do it. Microsoft for instance will pay millions of dollars to push MS assets at a company to fix there software and make it compatible with the platform where as Linux doesn't have the resources to do that.

The other problem I see is at the very end where you talk about how the different distributions have different marketplaces, etc. The biggest problem with the average computer user is they just expect things to work and want to be able to convey that knowledge to a friend, etc. If one friend is running a different distribution then it might be hard to convey that knowledge since the platforms won't be identical. I think what really needs to happen here is one Linux distribution needs to come out to rule them all. Linux (Desktop Distro) where everything is the same on every ones desktops so education is easier and sharing knowledge and experiences are better. The pro-user is going to figure out how to install anything on anything but I'm talking about the average user.

But realize a lot of this stuff I'm just playing devils advocate to give contrast to the video. I think Linux is amazing, I think it has loads of potential for the desktop but the right things need to happen before it's taken seriously by average users that are not closet cursor freaks like us. And a lot has happened over the last few years with X11 interfaces that are closer to Windows and OSX levels of polish. But another big complaint I have is in the variation of user interfaces on Linux and Linux software. Because it's so configurable and lacks robust centralized GUI common control sets across all shells and distributions it's going to be really hard for people to just go to their friends house and use there computer if they happen to be running a different shell or distribution.

BTW love the channel, I subscribed right away because I feel like you could have been my brother growing up the way you talk about Software. And to be honest had Microsoft not employed me for 15 years and brain washed me this comment would have been more along the lines of (LINUX!!!! FUCK YEAH!!!!)

Can't wait for the content! First time I tried Linux was in 2010. I had an old Toshiba laptop and finally decided to dual boot with ubuntu. I never booted into windows xp after that moment. I was mind blown that so many amazing desktop distros existed at zero cost. I was also amazed at how blind I was to the linux world before. Currently I have lubuntu on a netbook (windows 7 on it is a joke) but I have a more powerful asus laptop starting to gather dust that i would like to get some enthusiast Linux going on!
