*Doug is the type of guy to have the Short version of the video zoomed in 3 times to his face*

If the RX-7 had a more conventional engine like the Supra, it would have lost it's weight advantage and balance. It had to be the way it was. Not to mention just how cool and smooth the rotary sounds when you ring it out to redline while driving it. You could stack wine glasses on the hood and they wouldn't spill.

The idea of the 13bs being unreliable is kinda incorrect. Yes apex seals wear out requiring a rebuild but a blown rotary engine unlike a conventional piston engine can still be driven if needed and the whole job of pulling, rebuilding, and reinstalling the engine can be done in about 4 hours if you know what you are doing. The interval at which it needs to be done if properly maintained is similar to a timing belt on a piston engine and the process is similarly costly, time consuming, and difficult. If you start thinking of apex seals as a service item like a timing belt then it stops seeming like such a maintenance nightmare. Not to mention while very costly there are now ceramic apex seals which allegedly last so long as to effectively be a permanent solution.

Tbh the supra isn’t really so much a good car anymore, it’s the clout car. The object you buy to flex on people at cars and coffee- the vehicle you purchase to buy validation, praise, and the ability to fit in among enthusiasts even if you know nothing.

The FD is my favorite of the 90's era.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I still remember the day that I was cross shopping between the RX7 and the Supra. I had little knowledge of the Rotary engine at the time but even just looking at both of them parked next to each other. I remember thinking to myself why would I pick the Supra over this masterpiece of automotive beauty! I realize this is my opinion and boy did I go through many Apex seals 😅even 3mm steel ones professionally installed engines by petit racing. The thing about the RX7 is it is a great track car and you feel it driving one every day! The way the tachometer is displayed right in the middle the way the ergonomics are focused on the driver is amazing!

I've had mine for 25 years and 182, 000 miles. Still love it. Timeless beauty.

If the rx7 didn’t have a veilside kit in Tokyo drift it would be the same price as the mk4.

Tbh i have always loved the older gen supra's more sure they are heavier but i love the ferrari like sleekness to them and for me they are better grand tourers.

Doug is the type of guy to make a video about a specific car that only has pictures of other cars in it.

RX-7 is an ageless beauty and in terms of design, Supra simply can not compete against it.

The fd is a sports car. The mk4 supra is a touring car. Theyre not the same. The mk4 supra is more along the lines of the 3000gt, 4th gen camaro, or the ferrari 550 (yeah, i said it). Its a car that eats miles on a road trip, but still shows up to play when the road gets curvy.

The fd is nice, and probably more fun to toss around a track, but i wouldnt want to drive one from LA to NYC. There really qasnt much that competed with it at the time. The s2000 was still a few years away, and the miataor 180sx isnt fast enough. Maybe a ferrari 355 or a e36 lightweight. It sorta had its own niche.

The RX 7 is nice but that motor is way too finicky. I’ll take a 3.0L Toyota all day everyday PLUS the legroom of a Supra over the RX 7. Watch Doug cram himself into that car. It’s hilarious

My old neighbor has one of those in the garage with less than 30, 000 miles on it black on black on black factory, turbo manual.

Interesting how "notchy" can be used to describe a good gearbox and a bad gearbox at the same time lol

I'm a Toyota coupe fanatic disappointed by the looks of the current Supra and fact that it's a BMW. When Toyota announced the Supra would be a BMW, a journalist pointed out that Mazda announced they were developing a new inline 6 pretty much the next day, labeled it a "hold my beer" moment, and I've been hoping ever since for a mind-blowing new RX. Bonus that they're making a new rotary too. I'll take either or!

Personally I prefer the 79-84 rx7 not really a big fan of the latter generations
