If it's worth doing, it's worth doing wrong until you get it right.

Wanted to make something for my wife on her birthday. Never carved anything in my life, I am 57 years old. Knew it would suck. Carved a lopsided owl, creepy eyes, stupid looking feet. Gave it to her today at lunch on her birthday. She cried. Said it was the most beautiful thing ever. Find someone who doesn’t think you suck. Even when you do. And then never let go.

So weird how this came up, I've been thinking about getting swimming lessons and I'm 35, and the only thing that puts me off is getting judged by people

If you can't do it, try again until you get it right.

"It was never going to be good, and it never had to be."
Sounds real good! It's the most simple of truths that are the most comprehensible and coherent.

Grew up in a perfectionist family. My dad would always tell me "if you're not going to do it the right way then don't do it at all" so that's exactly what I did. If I wasn't naturally good or if I didn't find it engaging enough I just wouldn't do it at all. Now I'm 25 and am just now realizing how much I missed out on by the lack of "failure" in my life.

I absolutely sucked at figure skating when I started as a teenager. Hell, by most standards I still suck. But I'm a million times better than I was 2 years ago. I literally just did it.

"Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly." - G. K. Chesterton

You are so right. I fall into this mental trap all too often, thinking if I don't have the time or mental energy to put my all into something, I may as well rest now and do it later. Only to do the same thing the next day.

When I first heard this quote, I think the example that went with it was brushing your teeth--brushing for a quick 30 seconds in the morning as you rush out the door is better than not brushing at all, but it's opened up a whole new mindset for me in regards to many things in life.

Thank you for this video, it's oddly encouraging to hear that it's okay to suck XD

This is a reason I LOVED telling people I was taking circus classes as an adult in my 30's. Do what brings you joy! Don't allow internal judgment bully you and stop you from doing those things.

This is one reason why quality is suffering across the board.
Customer service is almost non existent.
Quality products are rare.
Skilled professionals are extremely rare.

Your videos mean so much to me man. I’m a person who can constantly make small mistakes, and those mistakes just echo in my head and I can never get to work, instead simply wallowing in past failures. It’s always so refreshing to see your face in my youtube recommendations showing me why I can so easily get to work. You’ve saved me on countless occasions, so thanks man

Phew maaaan - this hit. JUST the kick up the butt I needed; I've been avoiding growing and developing my business for fear of not being good at marketing and of worrying that I'll piss people off by contacting them.
Massive thanks for this vid; changed my mind, my perspective and my attitude

Ironically even what we are competent at we once tried for a very first time, at which point we were likely no good. However, we often forget this amidst the comfort of familiarity. Where’s the joy if we were just good at things all the time? It’s the struggle that makes the competency we eventually gain the most gratifying. Keep pushing, keep growing. Great message Joey and enjoy Europe!✨

thank you for this video, I'm 27 and only just really learning to find the joy in pushing past that fear of failure and actually trying something new, the narrative in my head has always been the same and has probably held me back more than I've ever realised - "don't do X, THEY will think.." and I attach that thinking to most of the people around me, believing that I'll no longer be accepted by people if my actions don't align with their needs or their perception of me.
Realising this has initially been a big step for me, mainly because it's helping me realise that the less I put myself into this box I've created for my mind, I allow myself to be more authentic which pulls people in and feels great because I've tried to be other peoples idea of good for most my adult life, which if anything has only pushed them away and left me somewhat isolated... I thought I had to hold it all in and squeeze myself into the right shape for the right person, place or situation. but actually I need to explode into my own shape and find where it best fits
there's not much in the way of positive reinforcement around me but things like this video make me feel more confident that I'm on the right path or at least trying to walk it
just needed a grateful/positive vent
do what you want people! there's a whole world of shit to do out there and even more people who won't get to experience it, trapped by their own pain and fear
my boss will be thrilled to hear im no longer scared of doing a bad job!

I came back to this video after watching it almost two and a half months ago. The first time I saw this video legitimately was inspiration to get back into mountain biking after more than 5 years off of the bike and 5 years of not getting in cardio regularly. I've been biking regularly for a couple of months now and it's becoming a habit. I think I was too intimidated by the fear of being judged or the fear of doing a bad job. But after a few weeks of persistence and feeling uncomfortable while getting back into it, I'm now riding technical trails I loved years ago. So... thank you!

Something that’s seriously so true. It’s what people are afraid of most now more than ever especially thanks to social media. What we don’t let ourselves remember is that our bad gets better, the baseline of our bad is what we’re improving and allows us to become better. Great video like always and really excited to see some B-roll in Europe!
