What began the Gulf War?
In 1990 Saddam Hussein's Iraq invaded Kuwait, causing outrage across much of the wider Arab world and across the international community. When Iraq refused to withdraw a coalition of dozens of states led by the USA fought the Gulf War to force Saddam's forces out of Kuwait.

My parents became refugees in 1990, fleeing to Saudi Arabia to escape the war, they came back to plundered homes, destroyed family owned shops, stolen jewelry, and dolls, but as many said during that time “ we want our country back, even if it was nothing more than sand “

You should also mention that, while the west did send aid to Saddam in the Iran Iraq war, the vast majority of Saddam said came from communist states. 57% of his arms came from Russia, 13% from France, and 12% from China. The US and Britain supplied 1% of the arms. The US was initially neutral as well.

I genuinely believe one reason so many countries committed so hard to the coalition is because they didn’t have much else to do, like the Cold War was basically over the west was increasingly hegemonic and so didn’t really have any active enemy to fight so when a sovereign state was invaded it was a chance to use some of that Cold War build up to use, since there was nothing else really occupying internal attention restoring Kuwait, protecting the oil supply from Iraq and asserting the new international order was a good reason to commit

“This time with no evidence” a Un investigation to determine if Kuwait was not honoring its obligation to pump less oil to stabilize prices globally determined not only were they violating it in shared oil fields but they were directional drilling into complete Iraqi fields in total. As horrible of a person as saddam was the invasion was not unjust.
