EV Battery Degradation: Basic guidelines for extending EV battery life | Advice | Driving.ca

Like many parts of an automobile, the battery packs that power an Electric Vehicle (EV) will eventually wear out and require servicing or replacement. Some owners of electric vehicles have needed to replace battery packs out of warranty, and at great expense; the vast majority have not.

Whether you’re buying your first EV new or used, you’ve likely got some questions. Let's look at EV battery degradation, and what you can do about it.

I recently got myself a 2018 Nissan leaf 40Kwh and I charge it at home with a 3kw charger and keep it between 20 and 80 percent. I plan to only fast charge it if I'm on longer trips which is usually just a few times in the summer. Slow charging is both way cheaper (about 0.3 cents per Kwh vs about 6 cents per Kwh with a rapid charger) but also just way better for the battery health. It's also nice to not have to stop anywhere but at home to fill up like I had to in my old diesel.

One proactive measure that can significantly impact battery lifespan is the implementation of a battery limiter. Battery limiters, (also known as charge limiters or battery management systems, as far as I know) regulate the charging and discharging processes of the battery pack, helping to minimize stress and prolong overall lifespan. It's already availble for phones (like Chargie). But I don't know if something similar is in the works for EVs.

Thank you for this battery life information for EV vehicles. I plan to get an EV vehicle this coming spring 2023. I will talk to GM dealership about recommended charging. Plan to do charging between 25 percent and 80-90 percent when I get an EV vehicle.
In Illinois we have some hot weather during summers (90 degrees) -- But not real hot over 100 degree weather like out west. I don't know if cold weather degrades the battery, but I assume it may have some effects. i know it effects the driving range of the vehicle.
There is also an OVER TIME degradation of battery life in how long we have had the EV battery in the vehicle.
Take care.

EASY FIX.. i have a little guy from way down south that his job all day is to keep my battery cool all he needs is a fan and a mist bottle its way cheaper than replacing a battery

If fast charging is a problem, Then why?
Are the building fast chargers across the country?
