I recently did a chat with Colleen Clinkenbeard about this film. She told me that she was pregnant recording this film and the scenes where Hana‘s crying about her children, she was actually crying in the studio.
That is proof that she is without a doubt, one of the most talented actresses i’ve ever met. I love this film. I haven’t bawled like a baby since Fantasia 2000.

I like to think of this scene as a baptism for both of the kids. The timid boy Ame used to be "drowned" and his wolf self who briefly emerged to hunt the kingfisher was properly born.

It's less evident for Yuki, but this is the last time she's able to be a full wolf before she goes to school so her plunge into the river still marks a major change in her life.

The symbolism of him becoming a wolf in the instinctual need to hunt for his pack and almost dying but becoming reborn to contrast the death of his father when he chose to become a wolf....

The death of the father's wolf happened in a hunt.

The birth of the son's wolf happened the same way.

Ame almost dies like his dad in this scene. His father died on the highway while following his instincts to catch a bird, and Ame almost drowns from following his instincts and attempting to catch the kingfisher.
