Who Is Most at Risk of Developing Multiple Sclerosis? - Inside Health

In the U.S., nearly one-million people have multiple sclerosis, also called MS. It's a disease of the central nervous system. The cause is unknown but the immune system attacks the brain and spinal cord. It was previously believed that MS was less common in African-Americans, which led to under-diagnosis and under-treatment. However, recent studies show the risk of developing MS is actually 47% higher in African-American women and is at least as high in African-American men as in white men. The earlier you're diagnosed, the better your outcome may be. Dr. Holly Phillips explains.

I was diagnosed in 2009 at age 15. I’m 29 now and the left side of my body is basically dead. I wish scientists would work on finding a cure so I’m not just waiting for it to kill me anymore.

Here in Canada, the biggest demographic is Caucasian women born in May. Weird how it is so specific, eh? My mom was diagnosed in 2014, a Caucasian woman born in May.

If I remember correctly, Multiple Sclerosis is a Type 4 Autoimmune disease that is involved with the CMI (Cell-mediated immune) cells.

Funny I was diagnosed with MS a few weeks ago after years of misdiagnosed. From my research on it I have found out no one knows the cause but it's one of the most common brain disorders, its very hard to diagnose because everyone experiences it differently and there's no cure and signs usually start between ages 20-40. Also I was told chemotherapy is one of the treatments for it.

No matter what it is, being black is always somehow a risk factor in every medical condition. Even when it's something that only affects newborn babies, and the elderly, it's also always black people for some reason. But yet white people will still call me a conspiracy theorist.

By African-Americans do they mean _just_ African-Americans or black people in general?

"Nearly one million have MS"
Not bad considering there's 331 million in the united states.

Inside Edition, doing a story on multiple sclerosis, is so ironic for me.
