On this day in 1952, for the first time in history, viewers witnessed live the detonation of an atomic bomb. Here is a British Movietone report featuring a similar event that occurred the following year.
Large numbers took part as close-up witnesses of the recent atomic blast in Nevada. The atomic "device", a relatively small affair compared with some previous explosions, was to test flash and blast effects. Typical American houses were constructed and occupied by "dummies". The American Air Force (who have dropped 14 of the 20 bombs exploded on Yucca Flats) released pictures of an atom bomb "drop".
Cut story - KS. Various shots of the atom bomb before firing. Aerial shots of it exploding taken from various angles.
