CRPG is the hands-down best genre for the zombie apocalypse. When you are locked down in your bunker with no internet for the rest of your life, those games will keep you busy.

CRPGs are the best kind of RPGs in my book and they will never die as long as we who enjoy them support them and there is still a wide audience for them just by the wasteland 2 and pillars of eternity kickstarters as well as divinity original sin which was considered the best RPG of 2014

Hell yeah, CRPG ain't dead. I personally thing that, despite 2016 having been a sucky year, they're more alive than ever. Larian, Obsidian and inXile are holding the mainstream front, honestly, who would have thought 7 or 8 years ago? And the indie scene is livelier than ever before, and we're getting now a steady stream of croundfunded RPGs and turn based goodness out of kickstarter, it's a great time of RPG lovers, I feel.

Look at Divine Divinity 2, it was awarded Rpg of the year when it came out.
CRPGs are far from dead, they just have a specific audience.

The reason some people say that cRPGs are dead is because there was a period of time where they WERE dead. Dragon Age Origins came out and then the genre started picking back up again (which is why it's surprising to me that it rarely gets mentioned)

CRPG's are my favorite genre. They are not dead, but it just feels like it, and the quality has dropped thats for sure.

Great video! I'm playing through Tides of Numenera now, and enjoying it so much. The game looks beautiful, and the characters are fascinating. Another game you could check out is Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It's a first-person historical RPG, and the graphics look amazing. It should be out in a couple months. I backed it on Kickstarter, and so looking forward to checking out out.

Mostly the only people I see claiming that CRPGs are dead are millennial gaming hipsters (You encounter these a lot in Fallout communities/forums. Call them Fallout4ites) who shit on old games because reasons.

CPRGs are definitely niche now, but hardly dead.

have you tried spiderweb software games like avernum, avadon and queen's wish? They look super basic but are so excellent!

Indeed! RPG is my favorite genre in general, but CRPG is the sub-genre I like the most because it's the sub-genre with deep and interesting stories. On the other hand, ARPG is mostly tank and smash

Great video. I've played Balrum, the Avernum trilogy, Divinity Original Sin (1 and 2) plus quite a few CRPG/Roguelike hybrid games. Lots to be going on with and many more coming. The bar to create these games is quite low in terms of tech. Library's that handle sprite movement effectively, tools and game dev for these games - there is a ton of resource on open source to get developers started. Good stuff - really well honed, well coded, versatile and well documented. So 2.5d (3d Iso) games are a lot easier to get started with these days. Everyone owns a PC capable of creating a game and online collaboration through various project collaboration tools also makes it easy to get input from specialists in other areas of game design. All huge advantages over the coders and designers of 25 years ago. - and some great coders and game designers are doing just that.

Reminds me of the first time I played Fallout 1. I got it in a bundle and messed around with it for half an hour, didn't understand a damn thing, thought it was boring, played something else. But the setting was interesting, it rattled around in the back of my head for a few weeks and eventually I went back to it. As soon as I understood the systems and turn-based combat, everything clicked and I was like 'whoa man, this is incredible!'

there's been a lot of major releases lately, Wasteland 2, Divinity : Original Sin, Pillars of Ethernity being the most known, and each a success. Not to mention all the indie titles. Or mods/expansions for older titles. Even the flop that was Baldur's Gate : Siege of Dragonspear can be added to the CRPG games. Dead ? By no means. Still not mainstream, but that was always the case :)
