Relative difference or percentage difference - comparing values using a percentage

preview_player
Показать описание
An introduction to the concept of relative difference, or comparing two values using a percentage. All we need to do is write the fraction DIFFERENCE/REFERENCE and then convert that into a percentage. The "difference" is the difference between the two values we are comparing. The reference value could be one of the two values, if it is clear that we are comparing one item to the other. For example, if the question is how many percent taller is the oak tree than a birch tree, then the comparison is TO the birch tree so its height is the reference value. If it's not clear which of the two is the "reference item", then you can use the average of the two values as the reference value. However, this last situation is not deal with in the video.

Thank you for the clarification. I'm an engineer and was looking at the accountant like a fool who couldn't do math :) I've never operated outside of percentage differences.

Hi Maria,
It looks there's a mistake in this video.
The Percentage Change formula you described is correct for comparing previous values vs. new values.
But calculating the % difference between the weights of 2 pieces of bread or the price of 2 different meals, we should use the Percentage Difference formula --> The difference between two values divided by the average of the two values.

I appreciate the text explaining the equation ever so simply. This is a confusing topic because of the words" Difference and Change". In this context they have two specific meanings. Percent difference is comparing the difference of the two values to your choice of either of the two values, but percent change is comparing the difference of the two values to the original value. I hope i got that right?

okay. so I wanted to calculate the difference in literacy rates between males and females in an area. so if 70% of males are literate and 68% of females are literate. Is it okay to assume that the difference in literacy rates is 2 percentage points, considering the fact that the two percentages have different bases?
