This is actually just straight up good advice. Let kids be kids around the chessboard with no expectation or pressure - if they express interest in the game itself, great, if not then leave them be.

It's easier for kids to play something they're accustomed to (i.e. just knowing what chess pieces look like) versus forcing a regiment for what amounts to a hobby for most.

So Levy just confirmed Magnus stuck chess pieces up his nose

I was trying to figure out the best way to teach my 6-year old chess. I hadn't considered directly inserting the pieces into her head. Brilliant! I'll let you know how it goes. :)

But I totally agree that the worst thing to do is pressure them on anything. I remember a guy at our club dragged his two children to the club for years. Poor kids. What I'd much rather see is kids dragging their parents to the club!

Play chess in front of them. They'll naturally develop that curiosity to know/play as they grew up

Idk who needs to hear this but introduce your kids to as much different stuff as possible and let them decide what they want to do

You want your kids to enjoy chess. Play chess in a friendly environment while they're around. Make them want to be part of something you yourself are enjoying

Would you recommend cutting up the chess pieces and putting it in their food to build familiarity?

Rook to nostril 2 is the ultimate entry move.

I count 6-7 variants of this strategy....

My GF has a 9 year old who wants to play chess whenever he sees the set or I play a game or two with her.

The problem is he starts to change the rules, trying to capture pieces when there's another piece in the way or suddenly a rook can move in diagonals.

He's like that with a lot of games, if he's not winning he changes the game so he's winning. Eg in football he will start calling fouls if your feet touches his while seizing the ball so he can take penalties. Parents never really bothered raising him, he's a sore loser and still cries if he doesn't get his way.

I got interested in chess when my dad and brother were playing chess around me as a kid

I remember being 5 years old and adults tried to teach me Go (the Chinese board game). In the game, capturing is referred to as 'eating' in Chinese. So I literally put one in my mouth, since the pieces did look like candy...

My youngest nephew plays chess. He is 9 and surprised me that he knew how to play. Fairly good too. Probably 600-700 ELO. I wish I knew how to get him more involved with it.

Just cuz you couldn't go pass 1500 elo doesn't mean you have to live your life through your kids and force your dreams upon them.

Great advice. I'll make sure to feed my kids some chess pieces.

This is how I treat school, work and chores. I don't get anything done but I have a lot up my nose.
