Quick and simple guide to remembering ship light combinations as per the IRPCS or COLREGS.

We present a simplified way of remembering the various lights that are shown by ships, boats and yachts to indicate to other vessels information about heading and vessel type.

A single red or green light will most likely be the sidelight - and in the simplest form this means that the vessel is underway and gives an indication of which side of the vessel you are looking at.

More red lights that you see, the more you should stay away

If in doubt, head for the dark parts of the horizon - if it I safe to do so!

Please watch our other videos to get more information and of course you are more than welcome to come and join one of our training courses. We also have online courses that enable you to gain more marine knowledge.

This is the closest thing I've seen so far to what I'm always banging on about in instructor networks.. actually giving the information to people in ways that help them REMEMBER!! While one could be hyper critical and say that the flashing yellow/orange light isn't only for hovercraft (oh ye of Solent only thinking, lol) it's for all non displacement (planing) fast craft etc etc, and while I loved the mnemonic with trawlinG at night being G over W, unfortunately the word FishinG also ends with a G so once a bit of time has passed, the student could forget which word it was.. however these are a great injection into our industry where so much of the teaching is mediocre and so many students can't remember anything because of it! Keep it up. RR

In Virginia, a small vessel under oars may also display side lights.

By the way, in the United states a flashing yellow light usually means a vessel being pushed by tug in INLAND waters. Thanks for the videos again
