They used to use a lot of overlays (pre-made effects they can just simply paste onto the shot), in the original series, but for the special they actually used CGI. The car was CGI. The glitter effect also looks like CGI. The original teleportation effect was a simple lighting overlay you can do in after effects. (I think it’s called CC light rays in after effects). The spells were also now CGI. The golden lighting for the spell doesn’t look like an overlay, and if it is, it definitely looks more natural than the Len’s flare effect they used in after effects. Also the transition are now even CGI. Before they used to use sped up stock footage of New York City with the characters dancing in front of a green screen. They really upped their game for the special and used a lot more CGI like they did with the movie.
