A Low Budget Solution for a Scorching Hot Garage

I have worked and suffered in this garage for three years now and I've had enough. I knew I had to do something about the heat this summer but I didn't have the budget to hire professionals. We decided to take a chance on insulating the garage ourselves with insulation from the local hardware store. We were blown away with how much cooler the garage was from something so simple. The problem was solved but in true Dicky's Garage fashion we didn't stop there. Thanks for watching!

Insulate the door and you will all set. Homedepot sells sheets that are 2'x4' and fit the doors very well. They are a bit pricey, but I live in central Florida and installed them in my 2 garage doors that were not insulated and it made a massive difference as my doors are South facing.

Great info and video. I'm in the middle of insulating my home shop right now.

For me, just controlling the humidity is a win!

You need a radiant barrier fastened to the bottom edge of the roof rafters, leaving a 6" void between the barrier and the interior side of the roof deck, first. Also leave a 4" to 6" gap between the barrier where it approaches the walls of the building. You don't want to block air flow up there.

If you own the building, having/adding a ridge cap and lower O'hagan vents on the roof would good too. Heat buildup is bad for the longevity of your roof.

Below all that, your suspended insulation panels are fine. Evaporative/swamp coolers are good too.

I’m watching this 3 years after the video was posted. How are the panels holding up? Just watching you hang them up, it didn’t appear that there were enough joists to screw the panels to and it looked like they’re only supported at the ends with the centers of the panels relying on the rigidity of the foam to support themselves. Have the panels begun to sag in the middle and pull away with time and the heat from the roof above?

$200+ for some foam board isn't super "low budget" but I guess that's subjective..
