Shrinkflation is Now Not Included in CPI

In this video, we cover the shocking realization that due to the pandemic, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has not been consistently weighing food items that are included in the Consumer Price Inflation Index basket of goods. Because of this, all of the 'shrinkflation' that has happened over the last year and a half has not been accounted for in the official inflation metrics.

Corrupt government says 2%, but real inflation is around 15%.

Pro shopping tip to stretch a buck or two; Look at the unit or price per ounce/pound. Sometimes the sale items will cost more then another brand, or even a different size.

Noticed that happening for some time and it will only get worse.
Anyone else notice how the store shelves are also getting empty more often?

Joe, I have LEARNED SO MUCH from you, young man- you are an astonishingly good teacher/instructor. My mother has been in finance for most of her life(she's 'retired' now... yet still does the books for a few old friends/associates), been the CFO for 2 major medical manufacturers, 1 she was a partial owner of before they just sold it and the other was bought by J & J a few years back, at which point she retired. I've spent a good deal of time around her- but on the other hand, you, I found your channel only a few months back... my point being, is I have learned much more from watching your explanation of things. You do not mince words, Joe. Your analogies are easy to comprehend and the methods you use to explain hold my attention, which isn't exactly easy to accomplish. So THANK YOU for what you do, and for making learning about financial matters enjoyable(for me anyways haha), at 48 years old, I wouldn't have imagined EVER looking forward to the next video of anything to do with the financial world, yet here we are. Again, THANKS!

I’m seeing shrinkflation at restaurants and supermarkets

Company's have been doing this for awhile. Especially in the food industry's. They claim they were doing this because of consumers health. Unrealistic serving size, calorie intake etc.

Shrinkflation or manufacturers find ways to make things cheaper which sometimes lessens the quality.

I just spoke with the owner of a natural food company and this is what he is planning to do with his products. Same price, smaller portion.

They've been shrinking products for 20yrs. Sometimes at the stores when turnover isn't fast enough there's 5-7 different sizes on something.

Surprised to see that this effect is not correctly taken into account in the stats...thanks a lot for sharing!

Some statisticians are claiming that the rent increases are also not included in the CPI . They are saying that instead of them an answer of an imaginary question is used . They are asking once a year the home owner what rent would they like to pay for the homes they are owning .

This trend started many years ago, I worked for a large processed protein supplier, when they needed to become least cost producer the first task was to add more water in the
product, shave the amount of lean protein and package smaller weights, then raise the
price if that wasn’t enough.

"Shrinkflation" has been happening for years. How long have 2×4s been an 1 1/2" by 3 1/2". However, consumers should sue manufactures for fraud for illegal weights and measures, and these legal actions should have started years ago.

Shrinkflation for years. I almost had a heart attack when Häagen-Dazs started doing it.

Is there a website that shows the changes to the basket of goods historically over the years.

CPI was doctored in 1980 and again in 1990. Thus the CPI has been under reporting the real inflation rate for over 40 years

Joe for the past 20 to 25 years Americans have been subsidizing there lifestyles with Debt. They been borrow ever bigger sums to keep the status quo. This will continue until Consumers can no longer add more debt.

As a kid when going to the supermarket items were sold by the pound or in units of gallons, half gallons, quarts, pints or half pints. Most recipes took that into consideration. Now 5oz can's of tuna is just enough for an anemic sandwich. I stopped buying Marie's Blue Cheese dressing when the price went up to 4.99 from 3.99 while the quantity dropped to 25oz from 32oz. I could handle the price rise but along with the quantity drop, oh heck no!
