WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson. I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, and my books have been translated into twenty languages.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Wow now that's a book haul. You are still one heck of a bookseller.

Jen, your poem already put a lump in my throat. Growing up in and out of hospital as a child with a disability, I can already tell this might be a difficult but OH SO IMPORTANT read for me. I've already preordered my copy, but I'm even more excited after hearing this poem than I already was. Just... wow...

I absolutely love your work Jen but hearing you so eloquently read your own poetry was just beautiful. Thank you so much x

I have to read Go The Way Your Blood Beats. I remember watching that documentary as a kid often thought about him over the years. Can't believe he's written a memoir.

One of the best ways to make it through a Monday workday is listening to you talk about books!

I thought Thursday Night Widows (although I didn’t love it) paired really well with Melchor’s Paradais - two opposite perspectives on a South American luxury housing complex

I read Trust Me on audiobook recently after seeing your crime story video. Not my usual genre, but I thought it was a good story, well told. It had enough suspense without making it something that disturbed your sleep! Hope you enjoy it 😎

Great book haul!

Out of them, ngl I would like to read whichever books you end up loving and citing as favourites in your upcoming recommendations 😂I did add Elsewhere to my TBR recently because I loved Strange Beasts of China. And I'm intrigued by My Husband, because if it's good it would be an occasion for me to read a book in French

I think My Husband is probably the only unsettling book I've read recently that wasn't recommended to me through this channel. With distance I still can't decide if it unsettled me in a way I enjoyed or not (I immediately tried to make my mum read it though).

I really really enjoyed Dead-End Memories. I know we're only halfway through the year, but it is one of my favorites for the year, easily. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it

Hello Jen. I have just finished reading Black Summer. I thought it was excellent. I nearly put it down after chapter one... You'll understand why when you read it. Glad I persevered though.
Keep up the good work. Mel x

I just finished a poetry collection which I loved and kept thinking Jen would love this too, so much so, I could hear you narrating the poems as I was reading! It’s called Goliat by Rhiannon Hoosen published by Seren.

Hi Jen, I started the MW Craven series after your recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed. Got the second one lined up. Because you enjoyed MW Craven, I thought I'd let you know about another series my mum recommended to me and I've started by Rhys Dylan. The first is called The Engine House and I'm really enjoying. The Welsh landscape is just as prominent in his books, I believe, as the Lake District is in MW Craven's books.

Reading My Husband right now in the original French version. It came out in French nearly at the same time as Mrs March came out in English and I picked out both because the similarities intrigued me (the French cover of My Husband is even quite similar to the cover of Mrs March). Here are my thoughts so far: the stories are indeed very similar (I don't know yet about the ending 😉). I found Mrs March creepier and the writing style strongly reminded me of Patricia Highsmith (which I liked), but My Husband feels tighter, both in terms of pacing and of focus on the intrigue. I'm reading it much faster and I feel like the tension keeps rising, whereas Mrs March lost me a little around the 2/3 mark. Looking forward to hear you thoughts!

Hi Jen am.about to read Anne Enright's The Gathering brought in for me by one of my customers. I did warn him I was only half-way through 700+page David Copperfield (finished now and loved).
