Hello everyone!
I want to add some details to make the song easier to understand.

The song borrowed heavily from existing Ukrainian folklore. In fact, the first version was a re-arrangement of different versions of the traditional Ukrainian folk song “А в нашого шума (A v nashoho shuma)”. And Eurovision reported that the song needed reworking to fit the contest’s requirements. So we got the new version.

“Shum” honours spring, a traditional Ukrainian type of song attached to the spring ritual.
This season is the protagonist of the song: “Oh spring, spring, where have you spent your winter?”.
Nature is another theme: “Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing hemp plants, Sowing, sowing, sowing, sowing green ones”.

About the creation of the new “SHUM”, nicknamed “the sequel”, Kate explained to Suspilne Studiya:

“In the first part of “SHUM”, we are standing in protective gear and hoping for the best. We call the “SHUM”. In the sequel, spring has woken up with us and not make noise that spring heard to wake up. And now, we have a much better life.”

It is not difficult to see a reference to the overcoming of the pandemic in the lyrics: “Come spring, come, don’t wait around, we’ll go outside to love each other”. “Come on, come on, we’ve made some noise. Made some noise and awoke the spring”.

I got these informations from wiwibloggs

This is an old Ukrainian song performed during a spring ritual that calls for nature to wake up. "Shum" is a spring forest - as the rebirth of nature and life itself.
Considering that Kateryna, having only one lung, sings so magically, she is a Queen of song, she ist the Magical Soul of the Ukraine !

i'm italian and i've been a maneskin fan for the longest time and i obviously wanted them to win but i honesty wouldn't have been mad if this song had won, i'm literally obsessed. it's amazing and the fact that it is a re-arrangement of an ukrainian folk song makes this song even more special. this is what eurovision should be, bringing songs that really represent your country. i love it. also, thank you so much for the sub and the explenation, very much appreciated <3

This song feels so magical, so human, the same way cave paintings and traditional dances are, if that makes sense. It’s wonderful, and you can feel the energy even if you don’t understand the language. Thank you for this translation :)

Wow I’m from Slovenia and if I read the lyrics in English, I can actually hear and distinguish Ukrainian words and a lot of them sound very similar to Slovenian words

in Ukrainian language the word "шум (shum)" means not only " шум (noise)", but also the "ліс (forest)". ‼️"making noise (наробити шуму / narobyty shumu)" means "awakening spring (пробудити весну / probudyty vesnu), reviving the forest (оживити ліс / ozhyvyty lis)."

This feels like a song about a ritual for spring equinox, very Slavic, very pagan

There's a mistake in the official translation, I don't know how it got there. The owl isn't blowing into the water, obviously, that would be strange. It's "blowing into a pipe", making an uh-oh sound, metaphorically speaking.

This is the best song I have heard for years. The revised version is awesome. Who would have thought the different genres of music would galvanise together to produce such a masterpiece of a song. Listening to their other tracks. Such talent. My new fave band 😊
