I remember an interview with Jimmy Carter years ago and they asked him why he got into politics. He said there was a law on the books in Georgia that you could vote for your dead parents and grandparents because you knew how they would have voted.

greetings from Australia.
I have been watching the political zeitgeist’s of America for a long time.
Lived with you folks for a few years some time back too. AZ, Pennsylvania, Louisiana.
I too was a psychotherapist like yourself Thom.

It has occurred to me the only way to clean up the interference and lack of confidence in the Federal elections by gerrymandering etc is to federalise the process.
Set boundaries and ban all State or County interference in how many and where polling stations are set up.
We have then in multiple locations throughout our suburbs.
Quiet respectful solemn serious atmosphere and behaviour by all, always.
We have one of the proven safest least interfered with electoral processes on the planet too.

Our system for Federal elections is like every other democratic republic on the planet! Extremely stable safe standardised transparent.
What the US needs to do in my humble 48 year voting experience is to standardise ballots, standardise voting stations, booths, no machines at all but simple hand marked ballots. The only local and state contact is to keep out of the way of polling stations and manage lawful behaviour in their communities as is usual.
Make the run up to elections last 60 days, after the election date is announced.
Remove the Electoral College from the statutes.
Count each vote by each citizen equally I.e. The person with the most votes wins.
The only registering needed to vote is when you reach voting age and if moving between elections to change your voting area on the Voting Roll.
If you don’t then on voting day you vote Absentee (out of your area). This triggers a mail out to your new address to change on the Voting Register.
The mad thing you have about needing to register as democrat or republicans is also obstructionist of the freedom to vote.
You simply to vote - period. Nobody’s business who you may or may not vote for, your right your choice, your privacy.

you can vote by mail. from multiple states. one thing j havd noticed is some people change the spelling of their name by one letter, or a jr to a "second". also, i have seen others vote using their deceased parents voter card and or ss #. i think handprints, only in person should be the way.
