There have been questions about the practices of the Border Patrol. This unto itself is not an indictment of the value of the mission of Border Patrol or a majority of their daily efforts. However, they are real questions and what is most disturbing is the Border Patrol’s evasiveness to answer these questions or be open to dialogue about reform. They call immigrants “bodies” and their have been reports of workplace sexual harassment, mistreatment of detainees, criminal support of drug trade, harassment through border checkpoints of citizens, use of funds, and many other concerns. What they do is challenging and will always be imperfect. However, citizens will always have a level of mistrust if they don’t increase transparency and make sure they have processes that maintain their own integrity.
