Lifelong PC user SWITCHED to MacBook For TWO YEARS: My Experience

I was always a PC user, I played games on it, like that maple story stuff every 11 year old Asian American kid did. OH YEAH, and it wasn’t until 2010 that I got to use an apple computer extensively and then decided to use it in bootcamp mode, windows on a mac. But in 2016 after having adventures with windows laptops being space heaters, or having graphics cards act up, I switched to a macbook to see if the grass was actually greener on the other side, and now, I can see the grass isn’t greener, it’s just another shade of green. So, let’s talk about my 2 year journey with macs, the good, the bad, and the windows. Let’s get started.

Macs are interesting the moment you turn them on, with older models screaming so loud that it could even wake up half of the continental United States. They have a really interesting layout and the bottom dock is organized very minimalisticly, but at the same time functional, with the little black dot on the bottom indicating what is active. The icons all look nicely styled with a clean design and animations compared to the windows style that was cool on their phones in 2010, but now just looks like someone had too much fun cutting up some construction paper making these designs. The integration between ios and mac os is great, providing you the ability to share content between the two, making it very easy to switch between devices with apple’s services. Most keyboard shortcuts are the same as their windows equivalents, but instead of ctrl+C to copy, you use command+c. You command it to copy. Like how they command you to pay 1,100 for a new iphone. While the Mac OS ecosystem isn’t as robust as windows, everything runs really well, and in many situations, I love mac os and apple build quality much more than I ever loved windows. The overall presentation of the machine’s build and operating system design really sell you on a mac, and how it functions in conjunction with other apple devices, like iphones, ipads, and apple watches makes it a really amazing integrated product.

But I definitely do love a lot about windows, too. For example, on mac os, there are these street light icons that work similarly to close, minimize, and maximize on a pc. But on a Mac these are close, minimize, and FULL SCREEN, your dock? Gone, finding out what apps are open? Gone. The 3,000 emails you swore you were going to respond to? Gone. The time? Gone. Windows does a much better job at this because you can still access your applications that are open on the task bar on the bottom. I don’t want to have to wait a few extra milliseconds to switch to a different application, I want it now. It’s really detrimental to my productivity, and a bit annoying, I rarely use this button because of it. If you want to “maximize” a screen, you have to actually stretch the window across the screen like a cave man. Next, most applications that have a mac os app, probably has a windows app, but it’s never vice versa, windows is ten times more versatile when it comes to sheer amount of software that works with it, and that’s a non-debatable. You like games? You play games? Too bad, most games are on PC and macs have astronomically bad gaming performance to dollar ratio. Windows also has a superior file management system that is basically a pyramid and easy to navigate with each file taking up a specific tile. Yet Mac OS is a mess. Why is this possible to do this? This is an application, right? Nope. It’s a package, a program but you can only access its contents by right clicking. Why? It’s not user friendly in that regard. Lastly, windows machines come in all shapes and sizes, want a brick for a laptop, here you go. Want a brick for a desktop? Here you go. Love hot wheels? Here you go. The customizability and versatility of windows machines are limitless and is definitely its largest selling point.

Each one does something different really well and stands out in some way. Personally, for laptops I really enjoy using macs. It helps that the computer feels nice, the os looks pretty, and it can run windows if I need it. But I LOVE windows machines because it’s so customizable, let’s me play games, gives me plenty of options, and keeps me from being distracted. So, there isn’t a clear answer. There’s just machines I prefer to use during different tasks and that’s it.

Anyway guys, what do you think? Is there one you prefer? Why do you feel that way? Leave that in the comment section below, if you enjoyed this video, give it a thumbs up, and don’t forget to subscribe. I’ll see you guys next time.

This guy literally sped up his video instead of stretching it to ten minutes. I have respect for that

You can hold the Option key and click on the maximize button. It'll fit the content you're viewing to naturally fit on the screen. When I switched to Mac I found it crazy that Mac OS doesn't maximize windows, but over time I started to like the panel setup. Especially when it's fit to the screen. I guess Mac assumes if you really want to full screen, it's to be a no distraction single experience (and maybe flip through different apps using the multi-touch gesture), if not, you use multiple panels. Just a different OS philosophy. Use both OS but switch to MacOS primarily since 2013. Can't say one is better, but they serve different users with very different use-cases.

Thank you. I’m deep in the Apple ecosystem so for daily use I still use my old MacBook Pro since I don’t do enough to justify upgrading to a new MacBook yet. But ideally I picture myself with a gaming oriented windows desktop one day and the rest being Apple stuff because that’s what I prefer. There is no actual side that’s better than the other. It’s just preferences.

Also, if you want a quiet computer for recording audio or video, the Mac M1 and M2 are far less expensive than a quiet PC.

I'm a lifetime PC user also, but for the last 4-5 years I've worked with a series of Mac's as part of my job (I'm a Rails dev.) After this last one refused to connect to my home wi-fi during a simple system reset I decided then and there that this will be the last Mac I ever use. I'll be going Windows with WSL for my development environments from now on. The ability to use Linux as part of my development process is great because it more closely mirrors our production environments, and Windows machines are just much easier to use.

To maximize a window on macOS, hold the Alt key while clicking the full screen button. It won’t take over your entire screen, and it’ll just fill to the edges of the screen the same way as if you just dragged them out. Also, if you hover over the full screen button, you should get window snapping features

No, to maximize a screen you can double tap on the window's bar or hover or the green button on the upper left to see options.

I love both MacOS and Windows. You said it correctly! Different machines for different tasks.. I have a custom gaming PC that of course.. mainly use for gaming. For everything else I use my Macbook. Both great machines.

I think my problem is I like both of them but never really owned a Mac and I want to. But I don’t want to have 2 different machines at once. I will if I want to bc I can afford it but I don’t want to if I don’t need to.

2:42 Hold option and click on the green button. It’ll “maximize.” I just made a video on these features and how to snap windows on Mac if you want to check it out!

2:40 You can do that by pressing 'option', it changes the functionality.
