The Myths
Here’s a few things I want to clear up before we get into what decisions you’ll need to make on your journey to breaking 80.

In order to consistently break 80 you don’t need to:

Make many birdies (if at all)
Hit a bunch of fairways (you can miss more than half of them)
Hit a ton of greens (you can average as little as 6-7 a round)
Drain putts from over 10 feet
Breaking 80 doesn’t really look like most golfers think it does. You are not firing at pins and making birdie putts left and right. It’s mostly about eliminating the huge mistakes, and making sure certain parts of your game are strong enough to carry you through the round.

In my opinion, the things that are most important are:

Keeping your tee shots in play
Avoiding three putts
Hitting enough greens to make pars
Having a “functional” short game
On most courses you can make 7 bogeys and still break 80. If you start making double or triple bogeys, then it will become infinitely harder.

So it’s not necessarily about your golfing greatness, it’s more about your golfing steadiness.

You have to be really good at something, or pretty good at everything
I’ve been around all kinds of golfers who are capable of breaking 80 on any given day. From my own personal experience, and witnessing others, here is what I can tell you.

You need to either excel at one part of the game, or be extremely proficient in all parts.

What do I mean by that?

Essentially it all boils down to your ball striking, and your ability to score inside 100 yards with your wedges and putter.

I have seen golfers who are ball striking machines but have relatively poor wedge and putter play, and still manage to break 80.

Love it. No glove, walks up and thinks it through reasonably and takes the high percentage shot. Stress free golfing.

I’m a five handicap but a short knocker. OMP has totally changed my game. What a great man to watch play the game. True gentleman!

This ‘managing expectations’ approach is so simple yet so hard for the average golfer; well done

I know that this is an old video but I have started to watch all of the videos with OMP. Outstanding information about course management! (Especially for us "old folks".) I am now 71, stopped playing golf for 15+ years and have been trying to get back into it. I'm realizing that I have been trying to play at my older abilities, and this information is absolutely enlightening! Can't wait to play my next round with a renewed approach to scoring while recognizing my true abilities. (Don't know if you will see this but....Thank you, Liam! And a special "Thank you" to OMP! Class act!!)

I think he's a genius - I''m a 5 handicapper and my friend Will - a 14 handicapper has finally beaten me playing scratch golf for the first time in about 10 years and he claims the reason is due to this man OMP. I was desperate to see why my friend has improved so much. I now see why. OMP is an absolute legend. I'd love to see OMP go through his entire golf bag and show how he hits each club - or the one's he usually uses. What an awesome channel.

OMP is exactly what I aspire to become as I’m 52 now and I only pray I can still be enjoying the game at 80. Thank you Liam and OMP for bringing inspiration and instruction to all golfers for continued enjoyment of this great game! 👍

Just absolutely love watching OMP! He is indeed a legend. I would be tickled to go across the ocean to play with both of you. I turn 60 in September this year.

At 73, have been playing this way for 2 years. Hit it straight and keep in play. 2 putts or better is the goal. So far 90 is my best score. Great video, biggest point for me is not over hit which I am guilty of. Headed out for 9 this afternoon. Thank You!

I would like to thank OMP for helping me move from mid handicapper to single scoring golfer due to course management tips esp bump and run and putt tips. What a guy !!!!

Im 34 and I've adopted OMP style. I just broke 100 'got a 91' for the first time in my life and manage to get my first ever birdie too. Breaking 90 soon and then...80

Course management and the ability to hit to the right places is the solution. Pat is the master of this. Great to see him playing well. Thanks Pat.

I love how Pat looks so casual and unbothered when he hits the ball. So much less effort and careful positioning, and he does great!

This is my grandmother! As a teen, years ago, it was so frustrating playing with her. I could hit the ball 250+, and she never hit a ball more than 180. Yet, at the end of the round, I'd have a 85, and she'd have a 78. She was always dead center in the fairway, and never in the rough or traps, and she was amazing chipper (always a pitch and run, never a high loft wedge trying to stop it) and putter.

I'm now approaching 70, and starting to play golf again. I need to remember all this great advice, and maybe in a decade I can shoot my age.

I’d love to see OMP give a swing lesson for older golfers. It looks like he’s a master with his lower body.

My dad just turned 80 but gave up golf years ago because he says his shoulder hurts.
His dad lived to 103, playing 5 days/wk until 98.

He could have kept going but said he played too slow, as he refused to ride and always shoulder carried his little bag of clubs. Amazing old grandpa!

I absolutely love the way that OMP doesn't indulge in any fannying about, address the ball and play the shot! Brilliant!
