MiSTer FPGA DE-10 Nano Neo Geo AES / MVS Setup Tutorial and Core Review

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is!

On this episode of our MiSTer series we will be going over the amazing Neo Geo AES / MVS Core; including how to add ROMS and BIOS files to the MiSTER so the core will function, how to deal with the UniBios, and how to set the core up for the most authentic Neo Geo experience possible. It's basically an arcade cabinet in your home! It's a full "MiSTer How to" for your Neo Geo games!

Additionally I have reviewed the core for accuracy against an original Neo Geo AES with original games so you can see just how accurate the core is (spoiler alert : I cannot tell a single difference)

Like you, I also have a NeoGeo AES and MiSTer. The MiSTer is awesome, but there’s no way I’m going to sell my AES. I’ve had it since the 90’s and it’s the console I’ve kept the longest. It has a lot of sentimental value for me. Looking forward for the next MiSTer video.

MiSter has changed the game especially for Neo Geo, after getting my Neo to USB adaptor it's exactly the same as playing real hardware... especially when connected to my CRT. I still have an original AES + games but will prob sell eventually

Actually the decapping of the neo geo chips was done by furrtek before he knew about MiSTer. The mister community saw that he already had done most of the work and started supporting him on Patreon and he ported it to MiSTer as a result. Furrteks work on neo geo is helpful to anyone in the neo geo scene

I'll always prefer original hardware but I do have quite a bit of respect for the Mister these days. It seems really good at what its designed to do, a perfectly good option for a much less complex/cluttered setup and definitely more affordable. When it comes to Neo Geo I personally collect for the Neo Geo CD and my entire retro setup gets fed into an OSSC. I love my physical collection to death but even with the CD's lower than AES/MVS asking prices I still shock myself from time to time knowing how much I spend on this stuff and that's not considering all the video equipment that I spent on to get it all to work or the vast number of other consoles like collect for. If that wasn't enough I also just purchased my first supergun this week so now I'm going to be adding expensive arcade hardware into the mix lol. Of course if I were to use a Mister none of that would be an issue but it also wouldn't be as fun of a hobby. I guess everything comes with its own price tag huh?

You’re right about the NEO GEO sound. I compared my AES to my ASP just through the headphone jack and man the ASP sounded like trash. Tiny trash with horrible clarity. This Mister is impressive.

I actually bought a couple of Neo Geo Gold sticks, swapped out their PCBs for Pi Zero (had to keep the original firmware 'cause the update removed Select as a single button), which was kind of a mistake (it's a bit overkill and a Daemonbite Arduino will definitely do the trick just fine), and they're kinda neat to play Neo Geo with on MiSTer. I might also get that Samurai Showdown stick at some point. Only problem with the old AES controller is that you can't swap the sticks out for anything else because they're too short on the inside. I'd love a version of that controller with a phreakmods link joystick shaft.

When you show captures, I wish you would put a subtitle or indicator which is AES and which is MiSTer. Great video though, I want a MiSTer now.

I've only played Matremelee once. I thought the music was pretty fun. I bet this game was popular for arcade ops in Japan. Never heard anyone say it's their favorite NG game. Maybe I'll check it out again.

Unless you are using integer scaling on the MiSTer, you will want some form of interpolation. Interpolation Sharp is a good standard. This will help reduce shimmers because of uneven pixels.

Everyone is saying the currently-in-development CPS2 core is basically 1:1 even better than the CPS1 core. That means arcade-perfect “Super Street Fighter Ii: Turbo/Grand Master Challenge” in home for the first time without a super-gun. Kinda big deal!

There's a sound pitch problem, too. neogeo core #111, #60 issue. The Neo Geo Core is not yet complete. What model of Neo Geo board ver. did you test? Models 3-3 and 3-4 have audio problems.

Para todos los que juegan KOF a alto nivel no sirve he jugado en pc y en sistema NEO GEO y siempre hay un tiempo distinto, pareciera que el sistema mvs necesitas pulsar los botones de manera más pausada y en pc el botoneo se siente más rápido, cuando pasas de jugar pc a jugar en mvs sientes esa diferencia pero solo veo videos que hablan de apariencia y sonido, si vas a comprar algo para jugar juegos de aventura y cosas como esa creo cualquier cosa en que emules daría igual.

Soundpitch is a bit higher on AES.
Colors are more saturated and brighter on AES.
Contrast is darker on FPGA.
