ABOUT THIS VIDEO

In this video, I talk about one of the most powerful ways to improve your vocabulary: Reading.

It has been proven that people who read regularly tend to have a bigger vocabulary than people who don't read as much. It's also been proven that reading fiction builds your vocabulary even more than non-fiction.

However, if you are struggling to express your ideas in everyday conversations, I recommend that you first start by reading lots of non-fiction and sharing what you read with others. This will help you will pick up hundreds of new words and get comfortable expressing your ideas.

If you are busy like me and don't have much time for reading, I recommend using the Blinkist app. With Blinkist, you can read or listen to excellent summaries of the world's TOP non-fiction books.

Why do YOU think reading is such a powerful way to build vocabulary? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Read, read, read, read. I read at least 50 books a year. I know songwriters and lyricist who read close to 250 books a year. There is no short cut. If you want to expand your vocabulary and improve your sentence

Reading allows you to see words in context. In this way you can even guess the meaning of the word without looking it up. That's why it's so powerful. Great video!😉

While reading, besides meaning of the word and the context, i also pay attention to the how the sentence is formed, placement of the word in the sentence, concepts like figure of speech, etc. This helps me a lot.

For teenagers like me who read but then get tired of reading, anime with English subtitles help, it gets a little used to but once you're used to it, it gets good and you learn faster in my case.

Your tips help us EFL learners build vocabulary. For reading books we need passive vocabulary and for speaking we need active vocabulary. Then, as you mentioned in the video, reading a book and telling the story to somebody are a great way to expand our true vocabulary. This kind of integrated learning method using two skills simultaneously is really effective, based on my experience. Keep doing videos about you know how to have a good command of a foreign language. You are an amazing teacher.

I am a language lover and speaking from my experience learning 3 different languages on my own, I find that the most effective way to build your vocabulary is watching YouTube videos/TV show with only the original subtitles... and focus on the subtitles as you listen to people talk 😃

I like reading so much. One of my new year's resolutions was to read at least 30 minutes a day. I do believe that reading can increase your vocabulary and I’ve been using an app called ProgLingo which allows me to create a list of words and take notes about them. So whenever I find a word that intrigues me while I am reading I add it to my collection in the app. There I can search for its meaning, search web results, images and so on. And best part is that it’s easier to revise them. I used to write the words on paper, but using the cell phone I don’t lose my notes. It used to happen so often.

I agreed with absolutely everything you said there. When you read you feel like you can talk and discuss about anything, and reading can, sure, makes you express your ideas way better. That was a great video. Thank you

What a perfect explanation! I've been struggling with building my vocabulary for decades (literally), but the problem is that I'm a slow reader and I don't like reading so much. I started to read more non-fiction books a couple of years ago, but, as you say, I may have to try to read more fiction books soon.

Hi Stefanie! I want to share one fact that I can sure what you say is totally real. I was reading, watching, searching, listening, etc. A lot of politics terms about democracy and all of that, I don't wanna be too much specific about that because that's a hard matter, but what I'm trying to say is. Since the time passed so now I've learned that without reading or searching anything about a matter you wouldn't learn anything about what you want to grow up in your life, so I'm ok on what you're teaching us in this video. Thank you, Stefanie, by your effort to teach the rest of the world to speak your language.

Question, which do you think is more effective as far as expanding your vocabulary, gaining intelligence, improving your reading comprehension and retention? Paper Books, or Audio books?
