Marlboro has an interesting history with motorsport. They’ve been sponsoring F1 teams, most notably McLaren and Scuderia Ferrari, since the 1970s, but throughout those decades, there has been controversy after controversy laid upon Marlboro. From illegal subliminal marketing to creating a fake shell company, Marlboro has done everything they can to stay in the F1 sponsorship game despite tobacco ads being banned from the sport since 2007. So… what did they do to stir up so much controversy? This is the story of the shady, slimy, and suspicious history of Marlboro in F1.

Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed :D

Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed the video! I wanted to touch on a few things you guys highlighted in the comments:

1) Mission Winnow (Phillip Morris) is actually still sponsoring Ferrari, but they aren't a main sponsor anymore.
2) Between 2014-2017, Ferrari had a very suspicious logo that looked like the Marlboro logo. It was square and had the same brand colors as Marlboro. I totally skipped over that, my apologies.

Early 2000s Ferrari had the perfect sponsorships to be iconic, Shell, Marlboro, TicTac/Vodafone, and Ferrari themselves are very synonymous with pop culture

Cigarettes are bad asf, but i think that Marlboro livery goes well with everything, you can even put that on a toilet and it'll still look good asf!

Great video! F1’s insane tobacco money era must’ve been something else! Not only Marlboro, but the ENTIRE tobacco industry got in on it.

In 2011-2017 Ferrari had their whole logo shaped like a Marlboro chevron and at some races they've advertised IQOS heated tobacco, when they signed Sebastian Vettel they've apparently paid him to use a phone case with Marlboro logo, they were also using him in Marlboro ad in Monaco. While the tobacco sponsorship is banned in F1, nicotine products are probably bypassing this rule as McLaren promotes VELO now.

Similarly to how tobacco, pr0n, and drugs are banned, we should ban the advertising of alcohol, high-interest loans, and gambling which I think is the worse of them all.

Either ban non, or ban all “instant reward” products with devastating long-term consequences.

It’s an absolute joke there’s betting sponsors everywhere in football and on TV. Bet yet as long as you say “be gamble aware” then that’s ok!

I wonder if Marlboro will try one last time to slip through the tobacco sponsor ban? They were found out in 2010 and found out in 2021... so... one last hurrah perhaps? As an ex smoker I have to say it was the F1 liveries which made want to try cigarettes as it fired up my curiosity...

How many championships is with that livery... really iconic (except for the health issues of course)

I thought Marlboro was a fuel brand as a kid

It sucks because even plastic model companies like Tamiya aren't allowed to have Marlboro on the decal sheets!

Too much control and regulations is the reason why I stopped following F1 altogether.

I can understand that 'new customers' thing, but I watch F1 since I was a kid, loved that Marlboro outfit on McLaren, but I never even thought of smoking because of it. In fact, no brand in this sport has ever done any effect on me to become a new customer. But again, of course I understand why they've been put out of the game. Nice video!!!

Marlboro also was sponsor of Holden Dealer Team or HDT for short in the Australian Touring Car championship mid 1970's to 1984 as well as Mitsubishi in the World Rally Championship in the late 1990's to the early 2000's.
