As a dog groomer, there are SO many people that don't want to pay even half that for their dogs, but also won't take care of their dogs and complain when you have to shave them super short because of matting to the skin. It's ridiculous. If you can't afford grooming or don't have time, get a short haired dog like a boxer, heeler, lab, pitbull, etc. that don't need to be brushed as often as the long-haired dogs. (These dogs still need maintenance, especially dogs with face folds)

Well I’m one of those who really didn’t do much research before picking up my GS, but quickly felt that deep burning hole in my pocket. Between trying to feed him better foods, grooming and health care my monthly runs about 700 which I definitely was not expecting. But my boy is 1 1/2 years old now and is happy and healthy as can be so well worth it.

I was very fortunate and had a groomer show me how to do a Schnauzer clip, so I wouldn't go broke paying a groomer.

Have a beautiful gs female. Finally learned how to groom her myself after a few years of pro service. Like someone in the comments said, these dogs hate any kind of hot weather. Heck, 65 degrees and she is miserable with medium length hair. Self-groom takes effort to learn, but is well worth it to see the dog happy. Invest in high quality clippers and scissors. No way around that. Will still save $ compare to the cost of professional grooming 6x year. .

I try to brush my golden-lab mix daily, but it's not a thorough brushing. You have to work with the time you have. So about 5 minutes in the morning before work. The consistency yields surpsing results

I have to brush my German shepherd 1-2xs a week and she still goes and gets a deshed bath. We do it ourselves at a self service dog bath once a month. We take her sis a pit/rottie mix along and moisturizer her. They absolutely love it

We have a gs. We learnt to cut ourselves. Not so much to save money, but more because every time it gets really hot, you need to wait weeks for an appointment. We cut around 5 times per year.

I do a shorter even Steven on my giant schnauzers around every 2 months for $90 and brushing once a week. It's a lot easier if you skip the show cuts and skirts and whatnot.

A lot of people don't consider or research grooming needs. We have dogs at my work that are dirty and matted. The one Assie shepherd gets impacted by the mats on its butt; he is currently here and came in with dried poop in his fur. Please take care of your dogs, they are your family.

That's definitely the negative with any of the allergy-free dogs too that have hair instead of fur. I have a Bichi-poo who has to be groomed professionally every 2 months at a cost of $90.00 including tip so that's basically $540.00/year just in grooming.

Dogs like schnauzers poodles shih tzus etc need to be brushed on a daily basis not a weekly basis.
These dogs have hair not fur.
Double coated dogs like German shepherds and Huskies need to also be brushed on a daily basis.
I used to be a bather brusher for a grooming salon. Bathing is recommended to be done every 4 to 6 weeks.
There are bathing wipes that can be used in between bath times.

The solution, as with most things in life, is clear. Get a Labrador.
(Just accept you'll be hovering 3 times a day and the ££ not spent on groomers is spent on new vacuum cleaners every couple of years)
