I have 5 copies of Orwell's 1984.
Its my favorite book, I can basically quote chapter and verse at any point in it.
But there are ever so slight differences in them.
A word, here, a punctuation there.
There's several sentences which are written quite differently between the first edition British version, published in 1948, and the first year American edition published in 1949.
I didn't know that when I bought them. I was just reading it and when the next word wasn't what I was expecting, I sat up and immediately grabbed the other one to compare.

i love browsing the used book section of my local bookstore and reading the inscriptions. i found quite a few autographed by the author, but the one i think of a lot was an over 50-year-old alcoholics anonymous book with an inscription from the previous owner that said:
“this helped me a lot when i needed it. i hope it can do the same for you. love, dad”

I have 7 copies of The Illiad, all different translators and those little differences between translations make a huge difference in my eyes, which is why I keep buying more

What is the point of making a book that's larger but has the same sized type? I mean, what was the justification for putting out the large-format copy? Large print I can understand although I doubt they did that sort of thing. But just printing everything with enormous margins seems strange.

Very occasionally i will do this, for a Tolkien LotR, i have it in the 3 in 1, individual books and another 3 in 1 given to me by my parents. All treasured for various reasons, but i also was given an ebook reader by a dear friend and my first purchase was LotR 3 in 1.

I know this man gets very few views for how high quality and enthusiastic his videos are, but I just hope he knows that as limited as his audience is we are just as enthusiastic to see his passion for this stuff! I hope he keeps going. I love seeing all these little gems and tips about buying books and random bits of information. It just warms my heart endlessly.

I actually collect field guides from different publications to compare and contrast how ranges of animals may have changed over time, or how we describe them, or what we know about them. Perhaps the greatest gems on these fibres, however... are entries for extinct animals.

Gems from a time that we were hopeful that these animals just MIGHT be able to be spotted again.

I have a habit of snatching up copies of Darwin’s writings, especially if they’re not in the greatest shape or sitting in clearance bins (a books version of a kill shelter imo). I have about five different ones now. As for the why, to me it’s mostly just amusing, but there are also different forwards/introductions, and two of the copies have someone’s annotations in them.

I had a library that was foolish enough to lend me a copy through interlibrary loan that was limited to 75. I about had a heart attack that they lent it

Well, I have 3 copies of the Lord of the Rings (one was my husband's bedore we got married, one batch are from a used book store, and one was a gift) and a dozen or so Bibles, but the redundancy factor doesn't apply to much else.

I just buy two or more copies of popular books in case someone wants to borrow them from me. I once had 3 different people ask to borrow The Art of War and one of them accidentally set my copy on fire somehow, so that was lucky
When they texted me an apology I was reading from my own copy
