Most chapagnes have their cork so much bigger that I would have to cut it in half before wrapping it with the wax paper...

When you put the cork back into a half drank bottle of wine and sell it as new again

Is there any other type of paper I can use, like baking paper?

Wax paper won't make a proper seal.
Just soak the cork in a glass of hot water, which will lubricate, soften and help sterilize it, then you should be able to insert it fine.
