SAVAGE | Alpe Du Zwift Attempt (Cat C Rider) | Breakdown & Vlog

Here's my second attempt at Alp Du Zwift and a bit of a baseline test for my training towards etape du tour in July, which involves me having to cycle up alpe d'huez.

I had planned to upload the entire video of my ascent of alpe du zwift, however with how long it took me, the rendering and uploading times I decided to leave it at this. If you are interested in watching the full whack let me know in the comments and I might upload it separately.

Done this climb 22x now, best advice is do at least once a month so your 30 day stats are posted on the left. Then use those numbers (watts and time) from previous bests and try to just beat each sectors numbers. This will lower your time quite a bit. I went from 83 min to 59 in about a months time.

Great Job! I can't even get past the 5th switchback yet. I'm going to get to the top soon! Thanks for the inspiration.

As prep for real-world climbing Zwift can be great, but it's worth ensuring the climbing feel is set to 100%. In this video you're spinning a cadence of 85 to 95 rpms on a 10% grade, which may be unrealistic on the real climb where your gearing will put you at a slower grinding cadence. The low cadence will burn your legs where higher cadence leans on your cardio engine.
For reference, my first trip up Alpe du Zwift took 44 minutes, because I didn't know what to expect or how to pace.

Nice effort! I registered for a similar event tonight, up the Alpe du Zwift. Watched your video looking for pacing strategies. Thanks for your tips!

You'll get there.. I was a 3.3 w/kg FTP rider and got up in 1:01:26 hahaha, I went away and did 6 solid weeks of SST training and came back with a set target in mind.. Basically aim for 3.2 w/kg on each switch back, so for me was 195w, if I did better that's ok .. if I did less than 195w I had to make it up on the next switch back, it was a hard ride but I managed to do it in under 60mins.. keep at it.. your not far off the sub hour mark.

It's a good climb Im new to Zwift but at 56 years old and 57.8 kg climbing is my thing.
You could possibly try some standing training and the bring that into your next attempt.
I Stand the full climb and just get into the zone, 47 minutes is my best at 4.32w/kg.
Fuel is super important too

To get under the hour you need to put down and average of 3.2 w/kg. Slightly less if you are drafting other riders in an event. You might try different pacing strategies as well. I found that starting just a bit easier then 3.2, and gradually ramping up the power. Hurts much less that way and I got my fastest time. Good luck!

I'm new to Zwift, my first attempt was 76 minutes, didi the 4 week FTP Booster program and yesterday did it in 64 minutes. I think I might have it in me, but we'll see... My FTP is about 3, 2 so... Great video!

Yes it can be done, give it ago, just don't go out too hard like I do when trying for a PB on the long climbs and keep cool. 1.06 is my best up Mount VEN at 1500 m climbing and I've done 41.59 up the Alpe but that might be my best.!!

9:21 Thats a great time 71mins...I did 80mins and am also with muscle which is my and your downfall. I know skinnier guys that lack the muscle but get up the Alpe in less than an hour. I have lost about 15 pounds of muscle in the last year and have improved my time by like 15 mins up the Alpe. My goal is in the next 6 months to loose another 5-10 pounds of muscle and I should be able to do it in under an hour.

Well done mate, Alpe is a toughie.. you have the fitness and power, next time start a bit slower and usually should be able to hold more consistent watts which will be quicker

Strong strong effort!💪 my best time 1:01 ugh, was with a buddy who kept me motivated. Perhaps that’s something you can try on your next attempt. I think the fact he kept pushing me through the rough sections made all the difference. Good luck on your sub hour quest!💪

I feel you that climbing isn't your thing - I did the climb a couple of weeks back for the first time as well! Awesome attempt though and well done! I love your gym setup..need to get myself something like that one day :D

Setting off at 300 Watts was suicide. Should have paced it more evenly.
