Newborn sleep cycles: Newborns up to around the age of 4 months or so only have 2 stages in their sleep cycle: quiet sleep and active (REM) sleep. During REM sleep your baby can open their eyes, blink rapidly, call out, make sucking noises, move their limbs around and can appear to be waking up, when they are in fact still asleep. The advice is not to rush straight over when your baby is making noises and moving, wait a few minutes in case they are in REM sleep as they could move back into the quiet sleep stage- thereby having a longer and more substantial sleep which in turn helps them with their circadian rhythm (body clock). Babies move to the adult 4 stage sleep cycle at around 4 months - commonly known as the 4 month sleep regression 💤💤
