It is a dream sequence. We are to understand she is exhausted, on all levels. She is lulled by the reminiscence of the tranquility of the pumpkins scene, in a bare room in an underground bunker. A calendar with X'd out days in the autumn of a world that used to be. And yet the relentless undead even find a way into her dream, startling her awake, because they, like all the other Undead Leeches in this world, never stop grabbing at you, never stop seeking to devour you for no reason other than base impulse and drive. There, leave the poor woman's acting alone, it's exactly right in my view, and I'm sure it's exactly what Romero called for.

I was watching Stranger things 3 and thought this was just some made up movie in the show but it turned out to be real...my god that reaction lol

The acting is silly but it works for the scene. It's a visual shot so a visual turn and pose works in its favour. Then there's the fact's it a dream sequence so if it feels unnatural or off in any way, it only adds to the surreal nature of the dream.

I remember as a kid seeing a scene from the original Dawn of the Dead trailer which had the dead walking by pumpkins on a hill similar to the photo on the calendar in this scene from Day of the Day. Can't seem to find this footage anywhere online. If anyone knows of it's existence can you direct me to it or let me know if anyone else remembers it too. I can't find it on any of the Dawn of the Dead trailers online.
