Hoagy Carmichael - Georgia on My Mind

© Written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael (music) and Stuart Gorrell (lyrics) ©

Gorrell wrote the lyrics for Hoagy's sister, Georgia Carmichael. However, the lyrics of the song are ambiguous enough to refer either to the state or to a woman named "Georgia".

Carmichael's 1965 autobiography, "Sometimes I Wonder", records the origin: a friend, saxophonist and bandleader Frankie Trumbauer, suggested: "Why don't you write a song called 'Georgia'? Nobody lost much writing about the South." Thus, the song is universally believed to have been written about the state.

(The photo has very little to do with the song. look for "To Have And Have Not". Brilliant Piece)

Barbera Paterson: Carmichael recorded "Georgia on My Mind" with Bix Beiderbecke on cornet[4] Eddie Lang on guitar, Joe Venuti on violin, Jimmy Dorsey on clarinet, and Charles Winters on double bass in September 15, 1930, in New York City. This was part of Beiderbecke's last recording session. From Wikipedia

So sweet he wrote this for his sister. This song hits different when you know who it was written for. Also given the loss of his baby sister I can see where he would be highly protective of her. Love it..

Most associated with Brother Ray (and justifiably so), it's a treat to finally hear it by the genius that wrote it.
Thankyouthankyouthankyou.
(His descending vocal phrase at the end has perfectly in-tune half-steps, except for one or two perfectly-executed QUARTER TONES, where he needs an additional eighth-note to make the phrase-length work. This is astonishing.)
(Addendum, 6 years later:)
I did a little digging, and I believe that this is the first track from the following LP, with the following personnel:
• Hoagy Carmichael – vocals
• Harry Edison,  Conrad Gozzo, trumpet
• Jimmy Zito – bass trumpet
• Harry Klee,  Art Pepper – alto saxophone
• Mort Friedman – tenor saxophone
• Marty Berman – baritone saxophone
• Jimmy Rowles – piano
• Al Hendrickson – guitar
• Joe Mondragon --bass
• Irving Cottler—drums
• Johnny Mandel – arranger, conductor

just to point out this version has a great alto sax solo by Art Pepper, and they even modulate from Hoagys key of Bb to Eb for the Alto solo....played beautifully by Pepper, and then back to Bb--nice arrangement!

Nice oldie and makes one think how many things have changed since then, and many of them not for the better. Now 89 years have gone since this was realesed but being a timeless tune and song it is still very nice to hear.

I saw Sometimes I wonder" as a play at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami -- fell instantly in love with this music. Ironically, (and shamefully) I didn't know about him until that day... it was early 200-'s.

Fell in love with the little song he wrote, Marry Me In Laramie that I saw on the show and went looking. I was never aware that he wrote this or some of the others. Beautiful instramentals as well that we don’t hear today!

A side note, Ian Fleming based his character James Bond's looks on Hoagy Carmichael. The next to this look is Timothy Dalton. Neat!

I love Hoagy Carmichael... although he didn't play this song in the movie depicted here "To Have and Have Not"... there are limited selections available for his music in this day... but he was so good. I have one tape... cassette at that. Can't even find a CD remake...lol
