LYRICS:

(Ah) Georgia
Georgia
The whole day through
(The whole day through)
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind)

I said a-Georgia
Georgia
A song of you
(A song of you)
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

Other arms a-reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still, in the peaceful dreams, I see
The road leads back to you

I said, Georgia, oh, Georgia
No peace I find
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind, oh)

Other arms a-reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still, in peaceful dreams, I see
The road leads back to you

Oh, oh
Georgia
Georgia
No peace, no peace I find
Just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind
(Georgia on my mind)

I said, just an old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

My name is Georgia. My dad's family was from Georgia. I was born in 1941 and Daddy insisted I would be named Georgia! Many years later, I was a student at Ohio State University in Ohio and a guy dated got tickets to surprise me to see Ray Charles and the Rayettes at the Auditorium. What a show it was!! One of the best nights of my life..Ray Charles is a master of song and when he sang "Georgia On My Mind", I had tears in my eyes..so beautiful! I'll never forget it!

I am white, British from Liverpool, UK, and in the 1960's my late father who was a merchant seafarer brought back a stack of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke records from a voyage he made from Liverpool to Jacksonville, Florida. I was seven years old at the time, but these two wonderful singers and their beautiful music have stayed in my heart and mind ever since. Thanks Dad, you had great taste.

How ironic: a blind man saw the world brighter than 99% of humanity.
Long live legend, your music will keep you alive 😢🎹

Ray Charles what a great human being. He was born dirt poor, went blind at 8 years old. His mother, not able to support him with no money, sent him away. He learned to play the piano and performed in clubs. He was booked at a club in Georgia, but refused to go on because it was segregated. He was a drug addict and kicked the habit cold turkey. After he cleaned himself up, he was welcomed to Georgia as their fellow Georgian. He went ont to become a philanthropist donating his money to poor countries. God rest his soul.

I don't hear Ray "singing" this song... I hear Ray "crying" this song, which is more than a simple song.... it is an ecstasy that pulls the thread of time, memories and life that stays, stays, stays and we are unable to recover lost time. Nothing comes back. Just Ray crying the Georgia Anthem.

I'm 57 white and kinda fat but ever since I was in my early 20s and I really started listening to a broader spectrum of music I heard Georgia on my mind and I still listen to it with anticipation. The pause when he first sings Georgia at the beginning of the song captures me every time. His voice is timeless to me!

This song reminds me of my Granny. Born 3/18/1921 in Union Point, Ga. This song is as beautiful and graceful as she was.

My mother used to play this record when i was a child; so it engrained in my memory; unlike rest of my generation, i was lucky to have been exposed to Ray Charles, his beautiful music and violins. Loved and miss him.
