I have 5 acres of pasture that have become a prairie dog village. I hear that they will destroy the pasture, but, considering they have so few habitat options, I am letting them have it. Maybe it is good in the long run to have the ground dug up with deep caverns.

I still miss my prairie dog Gus (12/21/1998---2/24/ 2002)I went to a pet store and he wouldn't let me leave his cage so we adopted each other. Him and my cat Smoke also had a wonderful (& very playful !) relationship

Prairie Dogs have the most sophisticated language next to humans. According to a BBC documentary on them, research has found they use sentences, with adjectives and adverbs, describe speeds and distance of approaching enemies and colors of human clothing or other animals. They're pretty amazing! Yes, they are very social--and intelligent--meaning: they take a lot of personal care. They are like parrots and want you to interact with them constantly. Pay attention to me! is what they are constantly saying.

I love how prairie dogs have an entire anguage syntax so they differentiate threats from ground, sky, or threat type.

Prairie dogs have a life span of 3-5 years in the wild, but 8 to 15 years in captivity.

They almost look like mini groundhogs! We've got a family of groundhogs that live at our pond and come out to the edge of our yard to eat the dandelions. They have the same long teeth etc! Super cool little guys and pooh bear sounds like such a sweetie. 💕💕💕

I have two females….They are some of the sweetest animals I’ve ever had. They’re sisters but have very distinct personalities. They make great pets but remember they are not domesticated and when they bite or use the claws on you there will be plenty of blood….Careful with kids…One of mine almost took one of my eyes with her claws in a fit of anger…A bit higher and I would have been on way to hospital with a serious eye injury. That being said they are still cuddle and treat machines, when mine look me in the eyes I truly feel they understand that I love the hell out of them and they love me.

the 3-5 year lifespan applies only to life in the wild, and pets will live up to 8-10 years if they're fed properly and protected from falls and injury. they really are great pets, friendly and affectionate if you treat them right. however, they will destroy everything in your house.

Here in Edmonton, Alberta, we have them in some of the parks right in the city. They are so entertaining to watch. I love seeing those little guys. If you sit still, you can actually get pretty close to their colonies and watch them skitter around.

He looks so much like a Guinea pig, when you have your hands cupped around the legs and tail. They are really adorable!

I have 2, sweetest and silliest pets I’ve ever had, I’m convinced they are the best pets, as long as you know how to care for them

Thank you. I know it wasn't my request to meet them but I'm glad somebody else did.

Loved our Dog "Dusty", he was an awesome companion. Taking care of a PDog properly requires a tremendous commitment and love. We don't like to confine any animal to a cage so our Dusty had the run of the house whenever we were home. In our experience you can't leave them unsupervised for extended periods. At the end of the day my wife would tell Dusty "Dad's home" and Dusty would race to the door to be let out. He would greet me in the driveway. When he was ready for bed (at dusk) he would go to the Foyer that was his signal he was ready for bed. He insisted my wife tuck him into his bed so she would say "Let's go to bed", he would follow her into the bedroom and climb into his bed. He slept in a small dog crate next to our bed. As soon as he heard one of us come to bed he would leave his bed and climb into our bed to sleep with us. He was trained to do that. We learned the hard way that you can't have a PDog in your bed unsupervised after having to replace the sheets multiple times because he shedded them. They have boundless energy so if you have your PDog in a cage for extended periods, give them something to destroy, it keeps them busy.

Years ago, I came close to getting 2 of these (same sex) but went with a hand raised flying squirrel and house rabbits. Anyway, this was a delightful video.

Very nice video. I am from Colorado and see so many yipping, yapping, “yahoo”-ing on my bike rides. Running across the trail in front of me and eating their grass. Wanted to learn more about these little guys. Thank you!
