My friend has a pit and when you’re really getting him with belly rubs he does this, scared the shit out of me so I stopped and then he tried licking the fuck out of my face. I think it’s just hard for the thought guys to show affection.

Some dogs growl as a form of speech. It doesn't mean they're aggressive. That's your own perspective. Bear is Just a very vocal pooch. How else are they supposed to speak? "Yo man pet me"? When told enough he stops but why silence an obviously happy pooch?
